There are several speculative stories attributed to previous owners such as descendants of the Italian, Giovanni Salviati, originally from Florence. It is thought that Salviati chose Madeira as a political asylum, after having taken part in the unsuccessful Pazzi Conspiracy to overthrow the oppressive tyranny of the Medici family, who ruled Florence at the time.
