  2. Very thoughtful and sound guidance. In my own experience, what I have learned is that the key is to take the all important first step, which often is the hardest. When we do, the next step appears and step by step, we begin to build a new future. You're a great role model for this. Thank you for so generously sharing your journey with us. (Leslie, it's nice to meet a fellow coach).

  3. Another great video. Thank you. Did I hear you have other YT channels? I had a feeling you had done this before. I'm on the path of creating various online income streams. What are your other YT channels, if you have them?

  4. Alan, We've watched a lot of your video's…this is another great one. One thing we've noticed is that there is a significant lack of graffiti and trash in Madeira, or are you trimming your videos accordingly. (Or perhaps this is an example of how Madeirainas look after their 'place'?)

  5. As we have come to expect from you both, your words are very insightful and often philosophical. If we're fortunate enough to reach that "Golden Years" milestone, we'll have to deal with life on a fixed income (some more so than others.) As an aside, would you ever consider organizing Big Ten football outings at a local sports bar? I seem to recall you are an Ohio State fan, yes? What a fun networking event that would be! BTW, on a slightly different topic, I use to live in a building that didn't have a doorman. The tenant in the ground floor terrace apartment ran Meet-Up Socials in his apartment on Friday and Saturday nights and charge an admission fee. The line often went halfway down the block. As the sun rose, the lobby was in a state I have yet found the words to describe. Not great fun, as a fellow tenant, but it makes me think you both could host Meet-Ups with various themes — perhaps at local bars, hotels pools, cafes, etc…. just one more income stream. As I recall my neighbor grossed a grand on each event. One or more of your monthly events would always make it on my calendar. For instance, Coach Leslie could teach people like me how to keep their opinions to themselves and to not rub people the wrong way. 😉 You have the knack to be a master Emcee and Leslie… well, she would be the veritable Belle of the Ball! Tell Fabio to round up some of his friends for the prerequisite "eye candy;" you know, that young, hip factor. Anyway, I like the way you think… there are all sorts of ways to create new options. As for real estate, I've won and I've lost. A bit of a crapshoot, I'd say. But that's me. Cheers!

  6. BTW: info for Americans on Social Security monthly Money- per AARP – the most recent (8/2022) SS COLO benefit raise for 2023 is 9.6 % ( abt $150.00 per month) . Good news.

  7. One of our sons is making serious inquiries into immigrating to Portugal – possibly Madeira and wants my husband and me to immigrate too , and we are not adverse to doing so. We will be going to the mainland and Madeira in February 2023 for two weeks with our son ( he will be there for one month). Our son has already attained a lawyer here and in Portugal Your information has been ( for me) the most down to earth information that I have found regarding immigrating to Madeira , and Portuguese finance issues- such as housing , taxes, insurance , language etc. thank you 🙏 LMW 🇺🇸.

  8. As always, very interesting and informative. Just to sound one note of caution. Buying to let always sounds good on paper, and often times proves to be a very lucrative investment. However, there are many many potential pitfalls to being a “landlord” During the pandemic many tenants simply stopped paying the rents on their apartments, and many state, local, or even federal governments all around the world put in place laws to shield those tenants from eviction. Many eviction moratoriums ran for well over a year (some are even still in place) plus the courts at the best of times tend to be painfully slow. There can also be troublesome tenants who cause serious damage to your property, or just the need to deal with general wear and tear. Being a small time landlord can be very problematic both financially, and mentally, and emotionally. It’s not for everyone. I have been a real estate broker in New York for close to 30 years, and I have seen some really crazy stuff go on. Just something to take into consideration 😁

  9. Very informative! We live on a pension, plus some😉, and decided to buy in Lisbon vs rent because our mortgage is affordable on that basic budget…As in a third of what we'd pay for rent and we can do what we want! I've never run after my bills and prefer to live below my means, stress free!! Best decision to buy vs rent in these uncertain/inflationary times I believe and am so thankful it was possible!!

  10. Wow, that was eye opening. To see first hand, that hard working Americans have to struggle to achieve retirement, is sobering. This rarely happens in Canada, unless you are tremendously foolish with your money. My parents retired solely on their social security income and live the same lifestyle you are showing us in Portugal. I plan to always live in Canada, but spend some winter months in Portugal. Thank you for touring us around, and explaining costs.

  11. Nicely done. Who imagined that vlogging would become an industry. We have our sights on Madeira and will be making our first pilgrimage in October. I hope they need an art school in Madeira… 🧑🏻‍🎨

  12. Perfect! You speak the truth. Although I had a pension plan and saved for years, I am single and lost property in 2009. So, I had to rebuild. I plan to start a mental health coach business.
I am an expert at that. I am trying to see how I can purchase a very modest place to live so I can accommodate the increase i taxes after the end of the NHR. I may need a loan but I plan to pay it off within 8-10 years. I won't know until I get there. I look forward to more from you guys. Life is unpredictable so it requires creativity. I have always lived this way. I can't wait for the new chapter in my life!
