About São Brás de Alportel (closest town)
São Brás, like so much of the Algarve, was a village back in Roman times, later being inhabited by the Moors. It’s the actual birthplace of the Moorish poet Ibne Ammar who wrote during the 12th century. Because of its beauty and seasonal weather, it was a favorite retreat for the wealthy. The area first earned its living in the production of cork but in later years, much of the cork business moved out of the area.
