Renovation Project Cementing, Rendering and Floor Boards Coming Out #67

Carrying on where we left off, preparing the door frames so we can continue with the rendering. Not the easiest job but it’ll look great. The floorboards we’ll get a start on, taking them up so we can clear the space to start the roof. We are looking forward to getting the messy parts out the way that’s for sure. But it’s got to be done so we might as well enjoy it knowing every step gets us anther stage forward. Every renovation project comes with it’s own set of obstacles and here in the Algarve we seem to have a constant battle with unreliable workers. So if in doubt, do it yourself.
Thanks for watching and as always for your support.
Andrew, Will and Burt.

  1. There are better (cement repaire) products for that application,
you can do it with wat you are using , if you know how to.
just not giving up also works if have the time to spend.

  2. Hi Andy, Great attitude the more fun you can inject into a project the easier it is and also helps with the frustration of trying to find decent contractors. All the best moving forward.

  3. I've done this sort of thing before but I've never done it like you're doing it. Not to say you're doing it wrong but how I did it seemed a bit easier. What I would do is use a rectangle shaped trial and put the mud on it and then smash it into the frame. Now I used real clamps so I would think that would make a difference as the frame didn't move.

  4. Plastering appears to be a special skill! I don't understand why it has to be thrown into place, as opposed to just pressing it in with fingers or tools… guess I have some learning to do! The place is looking better and better, and you guys are very talented!

  5. Hi Andy just found u , ur algarve blog is fascinating and something peaceful watching u … Will have to find #1 blog 😀 and catch up lol

  6. Best of luck on the project! Love keeping tabs on your progress. Wife and I drove by your place last week accidently. Don't worry I won't reveal your secret location…hehe. We just had an offer accepted for a fixer-upper in the hills near Santa Catarina (our secret location 😊) !

  7. I’m wondering if cob would have been an option for the top (and the rest) of the windows and door. It’s bit tricky to make, but in small batches, clay (sieved clay soil), straw ( you can cut the straw to make it a tidier finish or even rice husk or any local stuff you can get), plus water. You can mix lime in to make it stronger, there are lots of recipes online. Also more sustainable not using cement, but you do have to get a handle on it. I like it because you can just push it around, squeeze it on, none of that flicking and wasting half your material, easier in a situation like the window tops maybe. Looking forward to seeing how you get on, enjoyable video, thanks for sharing 👌👏🙏

  8. I can’t remember when I laughed so much at a video 😂😂
Another great one showing how hard you and James are working (and Christina). It’s going to look amazing!
Thank you for sharing and for lifting our spirits once again. Can’t wait for Wednesday’s episode 🤗

  9. When splashing the water on you should be saying bless you my son,try a bit of washing up liquid in the cement mix might make it a bit stickier, you are having too much fun with this build and such perfection in the cutting Andy.

  10. Andrew, I really enjoyed this video as always. I get the feeling sometimes you are just looking for a good workout on some of your endeavours….pulling up rotten floor boards would go much quicker with a reciprocal saw….since you are breaking many of them anyway. But, a good workout is worth it if that is the plan. I am certain given all your creative tendencies you have a plan for the layout in your head for this project? Love to hear about it. If it is not fully formed yet, here are my two cents: When I saw the space where you had removed the floor boards, wow, what an opportunity for and open vaulted ceiling from the semi-basement up with maybe mezzanine(s) for sleeping. Open it up vertically and horizontally. I have no doubt you are planning or dreaming away on this and it will turn out beautiful. But…it is your fault, I am now living this project vicariously through you and coming up with my own dreams!! Only cure is if you fill us in on your plan if you have one yet. Can’t wait…..

  11. Hello nice to see your progress but you realy need to get yourself a proper crowbar (Kofot in swedish) to make the removal of the floorboards easier, its a very useful tool.
Keep up the good work plastering with cement is not so easy as it looks.

  12. Hi Andy, You guys are really starting to make some progress, I can’t wait to see it finished!

On side note; you really should wear a mask when pulling up the floor boards, all that dirt, dust, decaying wood, and mold spores aren’t good to breath in.

Keep up the great work & videos!

  13. Great work Andrew, enjoy catching up with your friends, i am lookkng forward to seeing my kids after almost 3 years, i think i need to move closer to them, than be in nz, portugal sounds and looks amazing, as long as there's a golf course for my old fella, ☺️🥰

  14. Andy and James, once you have finished this project how would you like to renovate our stone house near São Marcos de Serra, just a little north of Messines? Your skills, experience, reliability and honesty are great assets that we would appreciate on our project. Please let us know if you are interested and how we may communicate with you future. Many thanks.

  15. Andy thanks so much for these videos, they are such a treat to look forward to. So gentle and peaceful in these troubling times. I usually watch them as soon as they arrive but I avoided this yesterday so as to have it to digest over my tea and toast this morning. Wonderful!

  16. James's cement looks moister than yours, Andy. It seems to be sticking better. How hot is it at the moment there at your renovation place? Wouldn't it be nicer to go around the back and enjoy the meal in the Courtyard, sitting on the top platform with a glass or bottle of something in your hand.

  17. Really enjoyed the brother teasing/love great fun,, there is just nothing like a well delivered insult,, my brother is soo much, too good at that 🙂
I mix tiling adhesive in when I need the concrete to stick.

  18. Enjoyed that, quite educational. Watching you helped clarify where I get things right and where the is a better, alternative or messier way 😂 Seriously useful and strangely absorbing 😀

  19. I'm just wondering why your not using Bonding for the frames instead of fighting with cement ? (Bonging being a sticky 1st coat filler pre render)
