Restoring an abandoned Farm in Portugal [Ep. 1]

We bought abandoned land in Portugal. And a stone ruin to restore.

In this episode we harvest some potatoes and plant a new chickpeas crop on our Portuguese farm. We save seed using a traditional technique. Find out what we did with the last of the orange harvest.

We give a little introduction about ourselves and show you what we get up to as we restore our land and carry on with our love of growing food, fruit and vegetables.

Thank you for joining us to on our journey to create a great big edible garden.

  1. Water is your first priority, water conservation, distribution.
Avoid bare soil at all cost!
Do not remove weeds! Plant among the weeds.
MY experience in a similar climate.
    Forget northern european experience

  2. Hi guys!
You've shown us a very old method of getting the seed out of the pods… on the stone floor of the "eira". Well done!
The kale variety for "caldo verde" is called "couve de horto" it's very hardy, produces a lot, cultivated primarily to feed farm animals (pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens, they all love them).
The outer leaves were picked for the animals and the tender central heart was left to continue growing, unless you wanted to make caldo verde: you need the tender leaves for that.
The time to start preparing your beds for the winter cabbages, is August – September. Till the soil about 20 cm deep, dig trenches, add rotten manure to bottom of trench, cover with soil. Ready to plant the cabbage plugs, sold in every country market. Water well after planting and never let dry till rain comes.
I used to prepare the beds and then wait for the first rain in September to start planting. If no rain in Sept at least wait till the sun gets less hot to plant all varieties, they sart growing in autum and ready to pick throughout winter & spring, till they seed around Easter.
When you buy cabbage plugs to plant, the seller will tell you the variety, there are dozens in Portugal.
Sptember – October is also the time to prepare the soil for "nabos & grelos" which are my all-time favourite winter veg. They need to be sown in place from seed (not planted) while the soil is still hot from summer. If too dry, we soak the soil before tilling & sowing. They may need to be watered regularly when little, but as soon as the rain comes, they grow with no more tending.
Two ways to pick & eat nabos: when young uproot them, cut root out and older leaves and eat whole plant steamed or boiled. After they shoot up, we pick the shooting stems just before they flower, leavind 2 leaves in stalk, and the plant produces more shoots. They must be picked regularly, don't let them flower, or they'll stop producing shoots.

QUESTION: I lived in the UK for many years and I love a variety of cabbage known as "spring greens". Do you know if that is the name of the variety and where can I get seeds? I don't think we have same in Portugal.

  3. Welcome to Portugal (It seems like you've been here for a while but it's the first time i've spoken to you), hope you enjoy this magnificent country "planted by the sea" and that everything goes well for you.

  9. Lovely to see an update, and see you two IRL 🙂 Shame about the potatoes, but I hope the chickpeas come through! Why chickpeas as opposed to peas or beans? I've always been curious as to what chickpea plants look like!
