We bought a 17 hectare (that is 42 acre) magical piece of land here in Central Portugal with beautiful boulders and 500 metre of river that borders it for just €58,000 back in 2018 . We are renovating a massive beautiful ruin and finishing our tiny house which is a gypsy style caravan .Tired of being a part of the rat race and constantly chasing our tails, Luke and I decided to leave our home country in search of a simpler more rewarding way of life and we found it in this paradise that is Portugal where we have been living for the last 4 years off grid and debt free. We make videos about our experiences living as total beginners and take you along on our journey with the aim to reach self-sufficiency in the near future , we upload a new episode every Sunday and our topics cover our everyday life living off-grid. We love putting these videos together and through these videos we hope to inspire you to go after your dreams and help create more awareness to the well-being of our planet

Lime. There is no other option in my opinion. But hey who am I to say what you have to do… Cheers!
The fig tree can be easily relocated after pruning. Will survive for sure.
about the roots of the fig tree: why not build an elevated floor? basically a crawl space foundation but within the walls.
Nice job on the fence… and yes Luke indeed get the grain of the wood as smooth as possible… not only for looks but also to treat the wood “after woods” … 😉 (sorry for the lame word joke.. 😉 )
And yes good questions on what to do with the building… but like the poop list first think macro and then go micro first get your idea’s on what you want and subsequently decide what you wone break down and renovate … but yes if it isn’t structurally save any more … it has to go down…. No mater what… but if you like I’ll be there in a month or so and we both can inspect the situation of the ruins and what to do or not to do with them… ? Just an offer… 😉 but yes seen the lintel hanging on like that it has to go and all the other walls (clay brick) need to be inspected if they still have a good foundation to stand on… but this said … like said before … It’s best I can be on the site to inspect everything… if you like
And Sarrah said it before … but love your video editing… mix of slowmo / timelaps, music and storytelling love to watch it every time…
And btw Luke I noticed you are wearing professional worker pants now …you do realize that is the point of no return… 😉 you’ll be working for the rest of your live …. 😊–
Wooow luke and sarah you made a nice fencing and your animals will be safe beautiful work
Could you move the fig tree and put it somewhere as a feature on your property. Lime mortar all the way would be my suggestion. And knock down the tojolo. To be fair itll be more use for the crayfish. It takes away from the traditional look. You guys are doing really well not to mention molly the goats, pigs and chickens. Thank you for your shows best of luck building your dream!
Good stuff guys!
Save some cuttings from the fig tree to plant elsewhere, but demolish the unsafe 1980s brick addition.
Thanks!
Your question about lime or cement: I would do lime, natural and breathing material, just as the stone. But I am no expert. This couple is in the process of renovating an old house in Central Portugal. They are very experienced in renovations and do things eco friendly. They use Lime morter. Their channel sofar ( Eco & Beyond) house renovation video concerning walls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1kKLsVDv7U&list=PLm5RDN9aI-gz24kVmaQiMjljzhthnuS_I&index=6 , their new channel Make Do Grow (for some reason they had to abandon the old name) https://www.youtube.com/c/MAKEDOGROW
The chimney will be fine with a flue liner/ flexible stainless pipe from a wood burner stove ,Knock the brick extension down before it falls down ,
Danke!
Perhaps you could pick piglets that viewers can see are different. 2 pure white goats are identical on camera, and sometimes confusing? Let's have Pinky and Perky with different markings. Also, maybe you should assess them all for intellectual ability!
Point in lime
Demo is the way forward for the ruin
Cement or lime…
If moisture can be prevented from entering the wall (main issue is from below, as a proper roof and cent pointing/render will manage Roland sides) then cement.
If the footings/drainage isn't up to / can't be fixed to keeping water away, then the moisture needs a way to exit -> lime
Ecologik dissertares you fance
question1: demolish, IMHO it doe snot look nice and as you said it also does not look structurally sound, question 2: i would test it with an extensive fire to see if the bricks can handle the heat. I do not have any experience with chimneys, question 3: i think cement or white cement on the outside were it has to withstand the elements and either lime or also white cement on the inside. Keep in mind if using cement you want to ventilat the house very well to avoid issues with mold and damp. hope this helps you guys. cheers Matty
there is one pigglet that is half (front half) brown and the back part is black and white (like a dalmation) it lokos special as its a mix of both…i think its a girl too.
How about that one?
About the fig tree
You can remove it and devid it in to 3 trees, just dig 3 holes and plant them elsewhere.
You are now 3 fig trees richer👍😊
thanks for helping Cindy and your farm looks great
thanks for all the smiles 🌼
Whatever piglets you get are in for a grand life with Sarah. The extension on your ruin looks very dodgy. I suspect with Luke its days are numbered. My advice would be to get an engineer or chartered surveyor to have a look. But i know your on a budget, a builders eye might be ok. The walls don't look safe but maybe foundation is ok. I would suggest you consider using lime plaster on the walls. So much better as it breaths unlike cement but your house your choice.
Another fantastic video!! Your place is looking amazing.
Is the Fundão market every Monday? We'll be in the area in a couple of weeks and really want to experience the market and any other local highlights you can recommend 😀
Cinematic gloriousness, YEW!
NO CEMENT! Talk to "The Indie Projects" They know all you need to know about pointing a stone building.
Yes buy all means demolish but not the chimney yet do more research on that. The cement story well if you say it's waterproof then I would go with that and you seem to have had experience with working with it so ja go for it. 👌👍
There's a video on the Project Portugal YT channel where he explains cement vs lime.
