After discovering the quiet and beauty of the Penamacor and Monsanto area, we return to visit a new property recommended to us by the estate agent, which turns out to be an amazing piece of land, including what seems like a nature reserve on a mountain with 360 degree views over Portugal and Spain!
We then return for a second viewing of the large property of 17 acres/hectares and take a walk around, asking ourselves whether what work would be involved and imagining what we would use the land for.
After a weekend of meeting some friends and a bit of respite from thinking about the property search, the children and I decided to go on a mission to find some beauty spots where we might want to visit for a swim in the hot summers. First, we visited the lake near Idanha a Nova (where Boom Festival is held) where the children played on rocks and the water was a good temperature. Then, we discovered an amazing river beach with a natural swimming pool and a waterfall, set amidst stunning, slanted rocks and beautiful trees.
We then went to view a 3 hectare property we had seen advertised on a local Facebook group, with fruit trees, olive trees, vines, 3 buildings and water sources. And then lastly, we visited the large property for a third time after speaking to quite a few people who suggested to us that 17 acres would be a lot of work. Would it really be too much land?
Who are we?
We’re a family of five from the UK (Layla, Russ and our three children); we sold our house and Russ quit his job so that we can pursue our dream to live a simpler, slower, more sustainable life.
Back in 2018, we decided to buy our beautiful Blossom, a Mercedes Vario ex library bus, to turn into our home on wheels. In March 2021, we finally moved in and set off on our adventures, starting in England and Wales, then Ireland and now in Portugal.
Find us on Instagram and Facebook.
And don’t forget to say hello in the comments – we love to connect with our viewers, Love from the Mitchells xox

You might easily lease parts to a local farmer for a couple of years…
Hello, what'sapp?
Hi Layla & Russ, Exciting times! I wasn't even aware one could speak to the council architect about stuff! The terrain is really beautiful and I think, like you said, you will fill it up fast – especially as you seem to have already considered what to do with each section more or less. I love the idea of having space for other families/RVs to come and check out the area – and of course the idea of rescues. 🙂 All the best with your investigations – can't wait to hear the outcome! xx
You look so happy there, you're glowing 😍 . Fingers crossed you get some good news from the town hall regarding the ruins XX
Hello, everyone ! I've been looking at expatriates to Portugal for four years now. Unfortunately, I've seen very few who really have a plan. ( In 2020, 1,461 Germans officially emigrated to Portugal and 986 returned to their homeland. Within the 10 years from 2010 to 2019, 9,642 Germans officially emigrated to Portugal and 8,461 moved back to Germany. ) That was just the Germans. !!!!! Most buy huge lands and overestimate themselves and you can total. A size of 1Ha – 1.5 Ha = 15,000 m2 is more than enough for a family. Even more eventually leads to frustration, excessive demands and the end. Oh yes, one more thing about "self-sufficiency" Flour, rice, fish and many other things you still have to buy in the supermarket unless you become vegan and get your vitamins in the drugstore. Sorry sometimes you have to write something like that to shake people awake. I'm looking forward to more videos and please clean the camera lens beforehand, it's really bad such a blurry picture.🤐🤔🤫🙏
Boom would have been one of my concerns, but equally a reason to attract me to the area! Whilst the noise may be a problem, the potential to do camping could be quite a lucrative one. My brother in law goes to each of their festivals and it is family friendly so something you could also get into, maybe selling food or drink or homemade items.
Nice to catch up with your adventures!
Any reason your face is in the way 95% of the video? Anyway doesnt it get really cold in this area for like a really long time like 5 months? I think thats part of the reason why land is so cheap there. It could still be good for a lot of purposes of course. But having bad insulation and all and then 5 months of cold, what you going to do?
Thank you for the useful information, we are heading over this summer hopefully to do exactly what you are planning. Great to follow along your journey.
Both are stunning properties! I am in the process of buying in Lardosa which is very close to the lake I think you visited. What is the name of the river beach that you went to as I can see myself spending hot summer days there. Best of luck with your purchase x
buy it, u could rent out half of the plot so u could use that rent money to pay off the materials, simple??
The one with the tower would be my favorite 🙂
Put in a cheeky offer
That tower would make an excellent guest house you could earn alot by letting that out , the property is stunning
Hi there 👋👋, I'm heading to that area soon. Could I ask the name of your second watering hole with the swimming pool. Looks amazing!!!
tres joli endroit avec beaucoup de potentiel assez d espace pour votre belle et grande famille suivez votre coeur
I wonder, the 17 acre property you like so much but is too large- could you sell off what you don’t want? Is it legal?
I live in Greece & have to say that Portugal certainly has much nicer & better kept recreation areas than we have here. I’m very impressed. The pool surrounded by boulders with wooden walkway & waterfall is gorgeous.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🥰
Please buy this land! Outstanding views & interesting terrain. I’d live in a tent to be on this land!
What’s with the strange colour of the pond? That’s concerning.
Wow!! It’s all so exciting!! 🙌🙌🙌
I’m so excited for you and your family! Thank you for sharing your experiences with others. 😊
Oh I hope it works out for you. Fingers crossed 🤞
Go with your heart,if you've got that feeling and love the land then it's right for you. There will be opportunity for the land to work for you. A few yurts errected could bring you some tourists or volunteers to stay when helping you work your land. Can't wait to see what you decide to buy. Sending love to all. ❤

Don't let the acreage deter you, it's all upside you can always let some of it return to a more natural state.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful Land and your findings in different locations is awesome love watching your journey ❤ can't wait for the next Video. Good luck and hope you find your dream property soon.
😀
Have you checked out the Quinta at Monsanto for 87,000 euro? It is 6000m with several ruins, one is already recovered with roof…can’t tell how big…one is an old water mill. But the most impressive part of it is that your next to a river which looked like your own river beach with hill full of boulders. Supposedly there is fish in there. Also great for tourism as you are near to the town of Monsanto. I saw it on Idealista. I would have bought it…if I didn’t live so far away!🙂
Hi it's lovely plot but find out about separating the land from the ruins for tax purposes, if you need volunteers to help for a couple of weeks count me in.
John 🙂
which agent u use?
Good luck 🤗
That is a lovely piece of land. I can see cows and sheep grazing happily on all those pastures.
That large property has a lot going for it as for the house you learn as you go along on how to do things building wise the internet will help a great deal, rebuilding stone walls is just fit rocks like building a jigsaw and plenty of cement lime mortar.
Thank you for sharing this, I am hoping you show some of the part where you consult with the engineer and the local offices, I haven't seen much information on that on YouTube.
