One Friday we rented two cars, fit in it almost everybody from our apartment in Benfica and drove from Lisbon to Porto. On our way there, we stopped to eat the “stone soup”* in Almerim and light a candle in the church of Fatima**. The trip was all about having fun while drinking a lot of Porto wine.
We were eating roasted chestnuts for lunch and burgers for dinner (in the fanciest Mc Donald’s ever) . And yes we walked the cute small streets and chilled near the river Douro, but then again… the wine tho’… In the end, all of these were not enough so we stopped in Coimbra*** to pretend that we were elite students, in Aveiro to eat ovos moles**** and in Nazare***** to watch the crazy waves.
This is how all those days looked like.
This one is for you, Benfica fam! ♥

*the stone soup of Almerim (Sopa de Pedra): the famous tale about the soup has to do with the act of sharing in times of need. It is truly emblematic of Portuguese cuisine, as it uses all of the ingredients available in order to waste no food. The legend says that a monk in need wanted to prepare soup by using merely stones and water. When he asked for additional ingredients to supposedly flavour the soup, the family who’d hosted him was more than willing to provide some pork cuts, beans, sausages, and vegetables, and the monk ended with a rich and nutritious dish without any stones inside. Using all of the pig parts along with signature Portuguese pork sausages like chourico and morcella, it perfectly combines for a hearty rich soup that has wonderful scent and flavour.

**Fatima: some sort of Vatican, but in Portugal.
***Coimbra: Portugal’s University city, hosting one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in the world and the oldest university of Portugal.
****ovos moles: a typical Portuguese dessert made out of MANY eggs and TONES of sugar. They look like eggs and taste asssss…. sweet eggs…
***** Nazare: here, if you are lucky, you can see some HUGE waves. In 2017 was registered the biggest wave ever surfed.
