This is the same issue Ghana finds itself in. You have a captain who is a hero in the country, who has an influence over the politics of the national team AND can be useful. But he is also just too old and does not gel well with the team for 90 minutes. Guys like CR7 and Andre Ayew should be in the squad but be brought on as super subs. The teams operate so much better over 90 minutes without them.

He only starts for me as a poacher in the striker position with Rafael and Silva providing him with crosses and either Joa Felix or Jota as a supporting striker behind him , other then that if he mentions to me playing on the wing to do his cringe step overs , he will get slapped 🙋‍♂️
