Nazaré, Portugal. This is home to the largest waves on earth. Where all the big wave surfers come from all over the world to surf the enormous swells off the lighthouse at Praia do Norte. After seeing the HBO documentary The 100 Foot Wave, we just had to come here and see it for ourselves.
In 2011 Garrett McNamara rode a 78 foot wave to claim the World Record largest wave ever surfed. In 2017 Rodrigo Koxa broke that record on an 80 foot wave. In 2020 Maya Gabeira rode a 73.5 foot wave for the World Record for a female.
Surfers have claimed to have ridden 100 foot waves here. There are hard to measure, but one thing is for sure… THEY ARE EPIC!
Come along with us as we explore this amazing place, Nazaré, Sitio, Praia do Norte and the surf museum at the forte Saõ Miguel Arcanjo, on our quest to seek the 100 foot wave.
