About Girl Meets Farm:
I’m Christine. I started this journey in search of my forever farm in Portugal, and now I have found it!

This is my adventure as a solo expat on a farm in Central Portugal with my two fur-kids, Shakti & Shiva.
I’ve never owned or lived on a farm, but moved to Portugal in the hope of fulfilling a life-long dream of finding open space, subsistence farming and a safer, better life.

Now that we have found our farm, the second stage of our journey begins!
I have to figure out farm life while renovating an agricultural structure to make it habitable and turn it into a comfortable home for me and my furkids.

Thank you for joining our journey!

  1. Now isn't the difference the clean-up made, just amazing! ?
Well done to you and your helper. Great job.
Glad he could also assist you with more information on the weeding, condition of the trees, etc.
Farm looking so great. You should be rightly proud … as we are proud of you !
All the best with keeping 'cool' in that heat.

  2. I have attached my wines in Poland .I have a small vineyard like your but it is very hard job to tie down all wines .It takes me 3 weeks every year .I think that it is a problem becasue they grow in wide rows and searcing sun going into all directions opposite where I want .I think that in cold climate you would better off planting wines more sparsely ,becasue they don't compete on the sun .If I were you I would add one more row betwen your wines .They may grow more upward

  5. Hi Christine, you have been busy it's looking so good. You have found a good contact. Rain is a relief, it cleans and refreshes. Next job is roof insulation and a ceiling fan. When the fruits ripen you have to decide in pickling, preserving or drying your fruits. Good you found a clean water source. Love your honest videos. You will learn a lot, work a lot. Stay safe.

  6. Well done on getting a reliable local helper.
When cleaning stonework (the bench) , white vinegar is very helpful to kill off the mossy mouldy bits.
    Loving your new channel.
    Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

  7. Maybe invest in a gas powered trimmer? Your fruit trees and grape vines look wonderful… nice and green. Here in Texas we are experiencing an extreme heat wave. About 28 days of 100(+} degree’s. Monday is supposed to reach 108. I couldn’t imagine being without our central air. You and the pups surely enjoyed the break from the heat in the rental. I’m not sure what your plans are… but maybe you could get one room of your house completely finished and have a air conditioner in there… not for sure how practical that would be.

  8. Well done. The water savings add up. I like your solar shower and the aircon. The grape vines are amazing holding themselves on with tendrils. I remember seeing a gas lawn mower that was a big strimmer on wheels. It might be useful for larger areas.

  9. Hi Christine, love your channel you are doing an awesome job 👍 It looks like the pressure washer has a variable flow lance attached, if you haven’t already tried this twist the end of the lance to the largest white mark this may help increase the pressure, hope that makes sense

  10. And another quick thought. Check what the other farmers are doing about pests and diseases. Figure out how you are going to prevent a neighbor who might depend on his crop suffering losses and starting a fued with you. LOL. I have seen how cross a farmer can get. My Dad (rip) once had a run in with a teacher who opened his sluice too early and cut my Dad's water off early. He was in the middle of the field directing the rivulets of water across it when it just stopped. He traced the fault back to the teacher who was back in his house by then. Understatement to say he never opened his sluice early again.

  11. Hi over there. Do in Rome like the Romans do. But once you know those ins and outs, then see if you can do incrementally better, ie containing the vine shoots takes a lot less time if the trellis does it for you and you only need to snip the laterals off. Also then you only top the vineyard like hedges, leafing enough leaves above fruit. The trellis will only take wire on either side of the poles with clips. Simply move the wires either side up as the vines grow to cradle them inside. I used to do the tucking on 6 ha of vine by myself. Is there a way for you to duel crop the vineyard? Maybe lucerne, wheat or lavender (perennial) or what ever that wouldn't interfere with your vineyard task too much. Is the spacing for a tractor? You can raise the vineyard at pruning time through correct pruning and trellis it higher. I used to leave 16 buds per vine: 8 left and right. Think about how much monney and effort the vineyard justify. Probably wine grapes. How much would you expect to produce? How much to expect to make from selling it or save from drinking it? But always first do in Rome like the Romans do.
