Serbia divided in opinion over Novak Djokovic's visa saga

From the very beginning there has been a divide in opinion over Novak Djokovic’s visa situation as debate “heats up” in Serbian media, according N1 Serbia News Anchor Igor Besermenji.

It comes as Tennis star Novak Djokovic could be “detained” again if he wins an appeal against his last-minute visa cancellation – according to lawyers for the federal government.

The visa saga is enraging people in Serbia where supporters of the world number one have been out in force for days in protest.

“Some of them believe that Novak could have made this whole situation much easier for himself if he just took the vaccine but others of course have opinion that it’s basic human right not to take it and should be respected,” Mr Besermenji told Sky News Australia.

Mr Besermenji said a “clear line” has to be drawn between Novak Djokovic himself and what his family has said in the Serbian media.

“I have to say his father’s statements were particularly inappropriate in some way during some moments in the past few days,” he said.

Djokovic’s father Srdjan recently compared his son’s situation with that of the crucifixion of Jesus.

Mr Besermanji also said Serbia is in an election year and that politicians are using this as a way to score points for potential votes.

“They’re actually using Novak to gain political points because Novak is such a huge and beloved figure here in Serbia.”
