Solo Woman Goes Off Grid in Central Portugal and Shares Her Journey from the Start

Let me take you back in time to my off grid land in Central Portugal at the very beginning! I’ve been filming since the start and I’m excited to share it all with you in this video series. I started this project back in August 2020 so there’s a lot of stuff to share and I’m going to attempt to go through five jobs per video and then eventually bring you up to now. Time travel… yay!

Apologies for all of the talking at the start with me in my sketchy doorway… I’d intended on having photos flash past but, alas, I ran out of time. I’m new to this YouTube thing and I’m learning filming, editing, and now I need to also learn time management!

Enjoy!

  1. I'm inspired and admire all of your hard work and achievements! As I listened and watched all you have taken on, I was in awe, and was thinking of all kinds of questions I'd love to ask you, such as, how did you decide to move to Portugal? Where did you move from? Did you know someone that lives there, before you moved there? This is the first time I've seen one of your videos, and I see there's 2 more, that I plan on watching, and maybe you've already answered these questions in your other videos, so I'll hold off on asking other questions whirling around in my head, and catch up by binge watching your other videos. I have so much respect and admiration for what you are doing, and have accomplished! I enjoyed your openness, easygoing and lighthearted humor. I look forward to more of your videos, and subscribed to your channel. 👍🏽❤️

  2. Digging the drain looked draining! I like that you’re doing things at your own pace, so many people with this type of project seem to be on some sort of mission. You want to get things done, but you also have to enjoy doing it. I see quite a lot of self flagellation 😂 Looking forward to seeing the garden, and congrats of broaching the humanure question, it’s a resource most of us waste, Permaculture teaches us to close these circles, literally dealing with our own shit, excellent. Sending you strength and best wishes 🥦🫒🥬🌱😎

  3. You have done a great job. I am amazed that you would take on the project with no carpentry experience. You will be a builder by the time you are finished. Awesome job. I would be afraid but why not give it a go anyway?

  4. Did the problem inside with water was solved? Nice…. but that PVC tube working on that was pure luck.
If any day you call for any kind of machine to move on the outside floor use some geotextil… But I hope its not necessary

  5. hi i ,started to see Jasper in my country, i was moving in to Alcobaça, from Lisbon, and youtube sugested renovations videos because i was searching it, and wow i saw you , the best luck and if you need advice pn something in Portugal , i will be glad to help, take care

  6. You really have accomplished so much in a short time! And you must be very strong to do all of that digging and shoveling! Kudos to you! I agree with you about painting your door. What a change that will be. There looks to be a building behind your house. Is that yours or a neighbor? Thanks for sharing your journey. I look forward to more of your "back in time" videos. See you next time.

  7. I believe!!! I believe that you dug out all of that by hand. I have been in similar situations and likewise, no one believes that I did what I did, except those who saw me doing it. After the tour of your acreage video, you inspired me to develop a spring that I have on my own property. I want to also get a sort of composting outhouse built. When I'm working back by the barn, the trek to the house is such a waste of time and energy and just too far! Though I was saddened to hear that you had to borrow a friends jigsaw. You are going to need more tools and supplies. Do you have an address where people could send you "help"? No, you aren't begging… I'm just pushy! LOL

  8. Admire your independence, determination and willingness to learn new skills – Great to see your home coming together Kirsty – not bad for a serial killer!

  9. So impressive! You have so much energy and determination! I love the fact that you just get on with things on your own, in your own way. I m particularly impressed by the limited use of power tools, although I realise you might have wished for more than just the basic tools now and again! Really enjoyed the video. Its made me want to get on with some of the many practical jobs I should be doing (although they are not on the same scale as the ones you are undertaking). Can I end by saying that toilet box is a work of art!! I look forward to your next video.

  10. Like your carpentry ideas, good tip about the compost toilet seat needing to be flush to the lid, because of the flies! The flies can be a huge problem in the country side, in warm weather. Good luck.

  11. Really enjoyed the videos and currently living precariously through them. Toilet / Throne ( i would bejazzle it after all the work ) is fab looks very sturdy. Suitable for a variety of arses. All arses great and small. Looking forwards to future vids. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Much appreciated.
