  1. I wouldn't worry about pensions, the new system has universal basic income, they've already said they don't want you to own anything so it kind of fits that, that is the approach they will take

  2. Hey Stu, as a Canadian citizen I had no problems at all getting my NIE# in September 2022, when purchasing my home in Valencia province. Of course this was accomplished in Oliva (Valencia). It took a week! So I guess it's where you're applying…perhaps going to a smaller town is the charm?? It worked for me.

  3. In Murcia I used a gestor to help me get an appointment at Oficina de Extranjería (almost impossible without a gestor) and got my green residence certificate converted to TIE in 2020 or so (having being resident in Spain since 2005). I now have Spanish citizenship and am delighted to say I'll never have to set foot in the Oficina de Extranjería again.

  4. I have an electric car here in Spain (2016 Nissan Leaf 30 kWh battery) that I bought used for €15k. I use it for daily travel doing about 60km (12kWh) on average and charge at home on solar (about 90% here in Murcia) or from the grid on cloudy days / in a hurry. The car is no good for even medium trips here in Spain A because of the relatively small battery and B lack of fast chargers and C fast charging considerably shortens the life of the battery and D the price per kWh in, say, a Repsol fast charger makes it the same cents per km as petrol. There are some free charge points at Mercadona, Bricomart, etc. but I've noticed people have cottoned on to this & are taking the p***, arriving in 2 cars, plugging one in, driving away in the other and coming back when charged – not buying anything at the shop. So for long journeys I use a petrol car that does around 6l/100km. I'm looking forward to affordable EVs with a 500km range and rollout of fast chargers at all petrol stations & "slow" chargers at all restaurants, hotels, car parks and onstreet parking. Which is a long, long way off.

  5. In the course of time a single language will prevail worldwide, although no time soon.
Language is for communication only and being parochial about it is foolish.
I imagine a 'world language' will be a mix and match of many of the current national languages eventually, which we're already beginning to experience.
National languages occurred because people didn't move around very much many years ago and now we do things are changing.

  6. Population is the biggest problem on the planet so a reduction is good not bad. Yes, short term it makes difficulties but it has to be tackled sooner or later. Needing electric cars is just a biproduct of too many people so less important.

  7. Hi Stu
Yes trying to find charging point points in Spain., Is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. They should put them in petrol stations where there is a cafe so you could get a drink or eat while charging.
Fast chargers only take about 30 minutes. But of course the oil giants don't want electric cars. So this will probably take some years to come.
By that time the World will extra hot.
    Due to emissions.

  8. Meanwhile I'm in Spain now , an EU citizen, wanting to integrate and have spent over 3 months trying to get a stupid NIE number.Still can't get an appointment. It's pathetic. I try everyday to get an appointment for this silly number.
    Can't do anything without one.
Spain's bureaucracy is a shambles and super corrupt.
They dont want to work, at least in Community Valenciana. Why should I pay an agent €100 to get me one.He pays the corrupt police so he get one fast.I even speak Spanish.
They don't make it easy to integrate as a foreign. It's far easier in the UK, Germany or Sweden for example.I'm thinking of leaving now.

  9. The air in Bergen, Norway was so clean smelling. Cars and busses were electric. Norway gave an incentive to people to buy electric cars. The bus system worked well. I never saw a gas station in Norway ,ironically they make their money on selling oil. I saw your headline and I was sad Stu, because I thought you were announcing you were quitting this channel. Finally, Finally, The Spanish government could have Sephardic Jews who want to settle there . Not only could some of them have babies , but many could come and contribute to the economy. Instead they have stalled things out and played political games with those of us who did everything they asked us to do to gain reparation . This law was passed in 2015!!

  10. Wages in Australia increasing with unemployment at 3.4% with full times for the most part.
I met so many Spaniards that were only working a few hours a week so in the government stats it will show them as being fully employed.
Coming to the lucky country was the best decision of my life.

  11. RE: declining birth rate…it's kind of hard to have kids when you and your partner are living with Mom, Dad, Grandma and your sister in a 70 square meter flat because you can't afford a place of your own…

  12. The lack of workers in the sectors mentioned is not down to people refusing to work. It's because they can't afford to live on the low salaries and crappy conditions on offer, especially now with inflation rising rapidly. The hostelry sector is leader of the pack in terms of low wages, unpaid overtime and other dubious terms of employment. Flooding the market with imported labour has been shown to have the effect of pushing wages even further down and greater exploitation of the vulnerable.

  13. Hola amigos,
I’ve moved to Madrid a few months ago and it was easy to sort out a NIE number. Just booked an appointment, completed a couple of forms including paying tax and got the number printed and stamped in 10 mins at my appointment.
The green card was slightly trickier but only because of the lack of information online and the variety of requirements at the police station based on who do yo get to assist you. At the end I just had to wait until started my employment, so my company registered my details in the social security system and printed me a form that confirms that and I had to take it to the appointment.
With the green card then I could open a bank account and register at the GP.
PS.: I would have never managed these without my Spanish speaking partner 😅
Nobody speaks English in Madrid 🤷🏼‍♂️

Edit: I’m an EU citizen which apparently makes things easier 😅

  14. Somewhere out there in the galaxy is an alien species that lives on 17,000 planets and yet they speak the same language everywhere on each planet. They must look at us and think we are insane speaking over 7,000 languages on only one planet.

  15. I learned my little English in Canada just to discover that I could go to the Chilean Patagonia speaking to everybody all along the path.

Canada gave me all the paperwork done before I learned a basic English. The problems with my visa, allocating me to a hospital, renting a house, everything. Yes, Canada was sure I followed the rules and drove me through. Spain is the oposite.

  16. Driving licence saga.. In previous updates, the ambassador spoke of two stumbling blocks, but they have now been resolved and now it appears that it is a matter of paperwork and final legal checks before the Spanish government finally signs off on the new deal and publishes it in the Official State Bulletin….
The ambassador was unable to given an exact idea of how long this will take, but he is hoping it will be just a matter of weeks and once it is published, British residents will have another six month grace period within which they can exchange their licence for a Spanish one and in the meantime drive on a valid UK licence…. I hope this latest info helps… Tony cuenca

  17. Remember that there are more Muslims and Chinese in the world so which language do you think that will spoken more around the world and its not English a no brainer really but some people don't think before they open their mouths..remember that there are only about 400m people who speak Spanish… LoL… Tony cuenca

  18. I meant to say that the Cambridge books students learn from in Spain are rubbish… Teaching the English language for me was ridiculous and hard work.. Students who got to the C level still couldn't hold a decent conversation… That tells me that the learning process is shit and needs rethinking… Tony cuenca
