  1. (I'm shortening this comment which grew too long.)

Stuart, you're a hero doing these videos. I believe you have the right to express some opinions.

It's funny: We had to wait till the end of the video for you to remind us that you're still in Portugal.

I hope there is not going to be a second major lockdown, because extreme poverty is bad for people too. I don't believe that Spain can survive a second one (economically) and still resemble the country we have known.

Though I live among expats now, I lived and worked with Spanish people for many years. I saw the devastation of Spanish jobs, families and communities following the construction & banking crash around ten years ago. Spain still hasn't fully recovered from it. I travelled to Madrid and watched desperate people beaten savagely by police, just for complaining. Spain has an appalling unemployment level and jobs are precious. We still haven't seen the full economic impact of the recent lockdown. God save Spain if there is another!

  2. Hi Stu! Great ocean views and climate in this one, cheers! This is all so absurd. Insult to injury as people go bankrupt, now you can't smoke or socialize for f's sake, come on man. God bless the people of Spain.

  3. The statistic used is totally misleading. Number of cases is meaningless. A country that is not testing much will have a low rate. If you test. You would have to test the entire population every day to get accuracy of cases. The real statisi=tic is number of real deaths (age groups) from Covid and number of people in hospital.

  4. As a non-smoker myself, my argument about civil liberties is this: allowing people to smoke in public spaces is violating MY civil liberties and basic human right to be a able to breathe clean air. I hope the smoking ban is the step that ALL area will begin contemplating. It is no mystery to me why Spain is leading in covid cases and deaths when there are SO MANY smokers. This is the one and only thing that I absolutely hate about Spain.

  5. I'm very impressed that Spain is taking the measure to prevent people from smoking in the street and outside in cafes. Yes, they take their masks off to smoke, they blow the smoke (and transmit their droplets) and as you say, they throw their butts on the street. It's a dirty and unhealthy habit, the leading cause of cancer throughout the world. Talk about conspiracies, Stuart – the tobacco industry are working to addict people to nicotine, which is why the biggest vaping companies are owned by the same companies who manufacture cigarettes. The reason that smoke are many, not least it is teen behavior, social pressure, that is exacerbated by the fact that nicotine is an addictive drug, many experts have studied nicotine addiction and liken the physiological addiction to opioids. The state has a big stake in maintaining the addiction. You mentioned that in Australia there are few smokers per capita but that is because the state has taken a dramatic and effective measure to prevent smoking – they tax cigarettes. This was done in New York City and it dramatically decreased usage – however in the USA there is no national leadership and you can drive to the next state or to an Indigenous store (known as an Indian Reservation) where the cigs are not taxed.

  6. Stuart: You say you're in Portugal. Did you move there permanently? Moving back after pandemic? How much does it cost to rent a place where you are? Thanks for your updates.

  7. It is amazing that people choose to live in a country different to their nationality, then complain about loss of freedom !!! How about the freedom to choose where you live?

  8. I certainly don't want my freedoms taken away, but I don't think I ever had the freedom, to at anytime, invade someone else's airspace with my cigarette smoke. Taking the liberty without asking if they mind seems to be reducing others freedom. "My fist ends where your nose begins." However, I'll keep my breath to myself self as well, and I'd appreciate the same. – on the metro at 6am.

  9. I was shocked by the amount of smokers in Spain when I arrived. Even the people who appeared to be “healthy,” including young people. But.. they don’t have so much obesity here like America.

  10. Re: SMOKING
    I don't smoke so i don't have a dog in the fight.OK !
I am astonished at the breathtaking stupidity of certain people agreeing with the new "rules" implemented (and about to be extended seemingly).
Very many of these people are railing against government intervention to curtail freedoms and civil liberties…… The New World Order etc etc BUT are happy to endorse this measure. Can you not see your contradiction ???….how very bizarre……but how very predictable !
What about alcohol ? What if "government" applies similar rules because a few scoops can impair our ability to conform to our "need" to socially distance etc.
What about banning sugar for example ? According to the Nat Institute of Health, obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the USA ( that's if we can even begin to believe stats these days). An estimated 330,000 deaths in the USA each year…."close behind tobacco" it states.
What about banning people from climbing Everest or K2 ? People die in the process.
I'm sure we could list thousands of other examples.
Somebody used the term "critical thinking " here which has since become the "buzz term" of the week. How about we start by just engaging our brains for once rather than blindly tapping out comments without engaging said grey matter.
I despair at some of you. Get a grip !!!

  11. I'm about to go for a 🍺 beer if there's an Aus there I have to check which way the wind is travelling or move..so as not to get clouds of cigarette smoke poisoning the air they also drop the packet when empty…

  12. Spain is facing its worst economic period in a long time. The country has been locked down for 3 months. Many businesses can only trade at a fraction of their capacity. Why does Spain continue with their fiestas, siestas, Red Days. How on earth will the country recover if it insists on closing for 2/3 hours every week day, 1/2 day Saturday, local fiesta holidays and national holidays? The sheer stupidity of it is mind boggling. The only way to recover is to trade their way out discount to encourage people to buy and open longer hours. Anything less and there is no recovery. Unfortunately my experience with Spanish businesses is not to offer incentives. Some shops do offer discounts but only at certain times and not very generous ones. Traders will have to dig deep and be resourceful if they are to survive.

  13. Here is a cool tip, if you are offended by cigarette smoke don´t sit next to a smoker. I can remove my mask to take a drink or eat some tapa but not to smoke …. logic? The two metre rule – what do I do if someone comes within 2 m of me when I am smoking, hold up my cigarette like a stick of dynamite and shout don´t come any closer! Utter nonsense.

  14. Regarding pronunciation, I have a friend called Rocío from Huelva and she pronounces single and double Rs the same. For instance she calls herself RRRRocío. In fact she is always rolling her Rs which is quite interesting to see.

  15. Sweden took the correct approach, protect the elderly, herd immunity for all the rest and work on a vaccine. I'm sick of all the lockdowns, loss of freedoms and government by fiat, now we have the Peoples Republic of Spain, tyranny has never looked better.

  16. Those here in the comments that are for banning smoking in public places, are doing it because it makes them feel as better people. This is usually a trait of losers in life. Keep on doing it…

  17. Oh no Stuart! The rolling R is very normal in Scotland Speak so try visiting north of Hadrian's Wall when in UK before making sweeping generalizations. I think some North Americans wouldn't agree either.

  18. I wish you read this comment in your next video. I just arrived to Spain from Germany for a trip. From one of the most successful country in control of corona to one of the least successful in Europe. The shocking thing is that the safety measures in Spain are the opposite of Germany. In Germany you have to wear mask in closed places but not in open air places and streets. It makes perfect sense while the infecting particles scatter rapidly where the air flows.
Can the people convince their government to reverse this thing? Probably hard. But people can be careful themselves. I mean wearing face-mask in closed places is definitely more important and a must.

Also I saw people all in big groups, and kissing for greetings.

Then people wear mask in an empty street that no one's there.

I love this country and this nation and I really wish they can soon come out of this situation.

Also one question: can I easily find a center for corona PCR test and get the result in the same day? I'll be in a small town in Andelucia. I'll probably have a lot of trouble when coming back to Germany without a recent test result.

  19. The most likely scenario is that when winter is back second wave Corona will come back with full force. The world and the people will end up with less money and less jobs. Banning smoking is a win win.

  20. Today I lost my sister to Covid. She was fine on Wednesday and Thursday she didn’t feel well. By afternoon she went to the hospital. Early this morning she was on a ventilator and 6 hours later she was dead. I am sorry but F all of you and your conspiracy theories. Sorry about the F bomb. Wear a damn mask and social distance. She was careful for the most part… and now she is gone.

  21. To those who want to exercise their tongue pronouncing R, try this: Erre con erre, cigarro,
    erre con erre, barril.
    Rápido corren los carros,
    por la línea del ferrocarril.

  22. For ne the hardest word to say in Spanish is Jorge. Two sounds as if you're hawking sonething up with a triilling r sound in the middle. Took me months of practice to kind of get right
