We have had a number of overnight storms and very heavy rain in the past few weeks. It doesn’t rain here very often but when it rains, we get A LOT.
You’ll see how our rainwater system performs and we decide to make some improvements.
Hi there 🙂 We’re Marc & Allys, a couple of left the UK in search of somewhere we could build a homestead, live more self sufficiently, off the grid and connect with nature. This led us to the beautiful Alentejo region in Portugal.
Follow us on our journey as we learn to live more self sufficiently and acquire new skills!

Advice for the rainwater collecting system: To have always cleaning water inside your IBC you need to have a 2 pipe system from the gutter. The first one goes direct to the floor (with a small opening on the botton) but with a "T pipe" on the top, and from that split goes the real pipe to your IBC.
The first pipe collect the first rain, with sand from air and debris from the roof, fills up and then the clean water goes finally to your IBC.
Any questions or help just ask 😉
More rain is comming trust me 🙂
You just need to put the Raptor on Baja Mode, and try the Baja Portalegre (well maybe next year) 😀
go for a large pond through swales !and 🐟
🌟👍🍀💐
What about th swales?
Good job, that is quite a bit of water to have collected in such a short time. If they fill that quick, you will need a whole collection of IBC's further downhill to empty them into 😁
Have you ever thought of using water tanks to collect water from the house? You can have them away from the house.
Finally some proper rain on the way,it looks like it will take four full seasons to experiment and find out about each one of them to be able to deal with the challenges sensibly without hit and miss sort of way .may be a man made stream beside the dirt road to divert the water and keep the soil hard to drive the car on .great video thanks for sharing.

Hi friends, really like your videos. Let me give you a few suggestions to help. For the pipe coming from the gutter, have a long pipe 3 inch coming all the way to the ground with a valve at end (this pipe will catch any dirt) at any desired height but above your highest IBC fill point install your Tee to the IBC. This way you won’t need any mesh because you will have a lower point catching dirt. Just make sure you put a valve to drain the catching leg.
For the air break valve all you need is any ball check valve spring loaded and you install in highest point in reverse. If there’s a vacuum that valve will let in air to the system and prevent the walls collapsing
Fantastic idea to store water now and hopefully next summer will be easier if drought happens again. Swale is a good idea too. Awesome job!
Enjoyed that. What a wonderful problem to have, harvesting too much water. You may want to think about getting a bigger tank and burying it to maximise your harvest. We're only in the beginning of November, you've probably got another two or three months rain on the way.
One of the big problems living so remotely is the lack of a barber shop close by. At the rate your hair and beard are going you may want to speak with one of the local shepherds to give you a shear. 😂Keep up the great work.
