D4 visa is the residence visa for study, student exchange, professional or volunteer internship. Today I will speak only about students.
Those who intend to study in Portugal for a period longer than one year, can apply for a residence visa. And then, if you wish, you can stay in the country (if you meet the requirements demanded by the SEF – Foreigners and Borders Service).
But if the period of the course is less than a year, you can request a temporary stay visa (which does not entitle you to a residence permit).
To request a student visa, the interested party must be enrolled in an educational institution in Portugal. The enrollment can be done remotely or through a power of attorney.
If the student wishes to remain in the country when the course ends, he/she can benefit from a one-year period granted by SEF (Foreigners and Borders Service) to look for a job in the training area. Afterwards, he/she may legally stay in the country.
After 5 years of legalization in Portugal, it is possible to obtain Portuguese nationality.
