Summer Garden Tour – What's Working and What's Not – Gardening in Portugal – Episode 037

It’s been 10 months since we bought our Portuguese quinta and started our no-dig veg garden. We expanded from 2 to 5 beds and added some extra, experimental areas.

We’ve grown lettuce, spinach, watercress, onions, leeks, garlic, cabbages, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, summer squash, winter squash, courgette, melons, beans and more.

In this video, take a tour around the garden in the height of summer and see what’s doing well, what’s doing not so well and a few other interesting things. We also run an errand in the pickup truck and take a look at some of the trees that are ladened with fruit at this time of year. And of course we’ll share some of the mistakes we’ve made and some of the lessons we’ve learned during our first year of gardening here in Portugal.

The Story So Far
—————————
My name’s Guy. My wife Kylie and I bought this abandoned stone farm building and ¾ acre of land in the autumn of 2020 and have been slowly (but surely) restoring it and bringing it back to its former glory. We’re doing a lot of the work ourselves – having tacked 3 previous property renovations in the UK (DIY style) – and we’re trying to use as many natural, traditional and eco friendly materials as possible while we build a semi-self-sufficient homestead.

We’ve spent a bit of time setting up a no-dig veg garden and building some temporary accommodation (a bell tent on a large circular deck) so we can live on our land while we tackle the building project. Stay tuned to see what we get up to and follow our progress.
