Worried about testing positive abroad? Well….that’s what happened to us! Check out our video to find out what happened and what to do next!
We were supposed to fly back to the USA on Sunday, March 13, 2022 and did a test from EMED the morning of our departure from Moorea, French Polynesia. Unfortunately, the test was anything but the good news we were expecting and by the time we got the test results back, we were scrambling for a place to to stay.
The key to making sure you don’t get screwed abroad is making sure you have a plan B, C and D if your test comes back positive. In our case, we did not have travel insurance that covered COVID-19 so we immediately started looking for a place to stay for the next 10+ days. We found a bungalow right next door and we frantically messaged the owners asking about a same day check in just a few short hours from our current check-out. Thankfully the owner not only agreed to a same day check in, but also offered us a discount for our stay since it was filling a number of gap nights that may have gone empty otherwise.

4. CANADA:
We used EMED for our testing to re-enter the US. Note that there are only a few approved covid tests for travel into the US, so be sure to buy the right ones. Also, be sure to plan in advance- don’t forget to order the tests BEFORE you trip. Nowadays it’s even harder to secure a COVID test, thanks to the new one calendar day rule. You must have a COVID-19 test (PCR or antigen) within 1 full calendar day of your flight. NOTE: this is different from the 24 hour rules. If your flight is at 9pm on a Sunday, you can have taken a COVID-19 test anytime on Saturday OR Sunday.

Glad to hear that you were able to readjust so quickly and find a place next door. These are the challenges of travel and we have taken a few trips also and so far so good. I thought some of the travel testing requirements were lifting soon (maybe just entering Canada/US but I will now check on that). Hope you are feeling OK. (Just a suggestion but only wear the mask when around others otherwise since you are positive you are just breathing back in infected droplets…possibly).
Max, so sorry to hear about the positive test, certainly hope you didn't get bad symptoms (hopefully it was a false positive). As always, you did a great job capturing and telling the story (including leaving in the bloopers) which shows the true authenticity of the moment of what you two were dealing with. And as you stated, there were worst possible outcomes to this, and if nothing else, you can blog the experience for the rest of the traveling world as a guide on what to do if this happens to anyone else.
