2022 marks the 500th anniversary of Magellan’s circumnavigation of the globe. It was a turning point in history: an incredible three-year voyage that ushered in a new age.
Before this epic journey, mankind‘s view of the world had been completely different: The seas were believed to be inhabited by monsters, and people had no idea how the world’s lands were connected. By sailing around the world, Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastián Elcano mapped the globe. The two explorers also opened the door to mankind’s next exploratory challenge: the journey into space.
Like Magellan, today’s astronauts are traveling into the unknown. The similarities between modern space exploration and the Age of Discovery are remarkable. Both the “space race” and the Age of Discovery were born of competition between two superpowers. Five hundred years ago, it was the kingdoms of Spain and Portugal; in the 20th century, it was the United States and the Soviet Union.
‘The Longest Voyage’ is an animated documentary from the award-winning team behind ’30 Years of Darkness’. The first journey to the moon and the first voyage around the world: Twin stories of two of humanity’s greatest achievements.

Guys are you crazy about this crazy man
he was eaten by filipinos man.
Western Cuisine was so boring, Europeans scrambled to find spices in the new world. – at least, that's how it started.
This is the first documentary that I've seen hearing on a Spaniard's point of view. Mactan just celebrated 500 years anniversary of this event.
Amazing..how Maluku (Ternate /Tidore sultanate) is very interesting place for European at that time.. ❤️🇮🇩
Conversion to Christianity of the Cebuanos was because of the Santo Niño. The queen Juana, wife of king Humabon, feel in love with the statue of the child Jesus from Prague brought by Magellan.
Christianity is the worst plague of all time .
fake USA made Philippine civilized not Spain
They didnt think of fishing?
I am about to upload tonight a small detail of this voyage in the Philippines after Magellan was killed in Mactan, Cebu.
the greatest expeditions of mankind ??? the greatest of all ,the settlement of Polynesia and the pacific .
Why there's no landing of Cabral in Bahia, Brazil, in the animation? (4:25)
The modern USA moon references was a bizarre and unnecessary distraction. It did nothing to help the story.
I'm a simple man
I see DW Documentaries, I hit like
such an amazing storytelling and animation – very well done DW
Filipinos are very friendly people and does not want war. That is why we dont have a king but we have numerous sultan and raja. We have good trading relations with neighboring islands and we live in peace. But when the spaniards came we became slaves in our own land for 300+ years. We have limited rights and majority were not given education as contrary to what others perceive that Spain civilize us. Just because we live differently does not mean we are not civilize. I admire the courage and vision of Magellan but he is also one of the main reason why thousands of our ancestors were killed and mistreated for 300+ years on our own land.
Colonization was Never good. Period.
Phenomenal video my friends! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻🥇🏆
Acting as if you are a king in a foreign land and ordering chieftains is an idiotic attitude. This is just pure greed and the circumnavigation is just an icing on top of an evil rotten cake. After few years, the spaniard came back to enslaved, loot, rape every island in the philippines for more than 500 hundred years!. That is history for you people.
The courage of the sailors was tremendously powerful. I'm still complaining my boss who encourage me to move new towns and to do different duties. 😂😂
They did not go to the moon 🙂
Excellent documentary!
Nowadays exploring occurs in space, not at sea
Seems that Magellan was a fraud & so were Columbus, Vespucci and everybody else.
Europeans had lagged way behind China which through an Admiral, former eunuch of the emperor, had circum-navigated the earth in 1421 with the use of a fleet with some three hundred (300)ships , all properly manned by competent crew & ample provisions. Somehow a world map complete with lines showing longitude and latitude apparently “made in China” was seen in Venice, home of the Medicis. Worried about losing out to the Chinese they issued Papal Bulls in 1430 and in 1452 ordering the European vassals to go forth & explore, discover new lands & to “ enslave in perpetuity the inhabitants thereof”. THEN these courageous explorers supposedly went about their great voyages ( with copy of aforesaid map ) and they pretended among themselves as to who was first to go around the earth.
So these days some climate refugees from Kenya are reportedly seeking REPARATIONS from the U.K. (estate of QE II) . Aside from England & / or any other European states, they should also go after the Church !!!
These aforesaid entities are most responsible for the consequent overheating of the Earth… and our impending mass extinction.
The accounts of Pigafetta are proly questionable . But am sure glad Magellan was whacked in Dapilipenis.
The world reaping the benefits and disaster of that journeys .
I’m portuguese. People should try to pronounce the name of Magalhães correctly. Most pronounciation sounds irish….
So sea travel started in the 1500?
Is that what your selling ?
Lol 😆
The biggest mistake of Magellan is confronting Lapu-Lapu. Our first ever Hero in the Philippines.
Our King Lapu-Lapu is just fighting for independence. 💪💪
Magellan is an explorer but at the same time a colonizer and invaders overall a scammer or trickster that's why natives fight against him.
Okay, but Asians (of mainland China) covered the most distance – reaching S. E. Asia, the Caribbean and the America's before everyone. I don't know why this keeps coming up. All Asians, all over the world, descend from mainland Chinese (albeit not all directly). Waves of immigrants braved the seas with the stars as their map and an uncanny ability to read the wind, the waves and even the scent of the ocean – skills lost to the depths of time.
Nice documentary, but a bit eurocentric (the charismatic europeans vs the savages 🙄). Also, i didn't know they didn't use religion that strictly in the expeditions of the 1500s, and that Spaniards were more focused on the scientific and exploratory aspect and not that much in the religious. So what did Pizarro and Cortez do in their friendly visit to the Americas? Didn't a bible take part in the moment the battles began?
What happened to the deserters ?
When I was 10 in middle school and learning about the world explorers, I wanted to be just like them! I have done my fair share of world travel……but not into such fearful unknown as these brave souls. I still light up from documentaries like this!
!!!HÉROES¡¡¡
The worst ever for mankind and the other native people why still glorifying invader's murderer
europeans in 1500s: pacific is unchartered territory
meanwhile austronesians and melanesians:
