  1. Wishing you a Blessed and Happy Good Friday. I walked out to the coop and was surprised to see 4 sweet little faces peeking out from under the Surrigate Mama Bantam. Biddie has been blind in her left eye since she was a few weeks old. Her Mama was teaching them to scratch and Biddie got to close to her Mama's foot. She is A 7 year old Bantam and went broody 4 times last year. The second time this year we received a gift of 4 white eggs. We hope that they are all 4 hens as roosters are not allowed in the city. Blessed indeed.

  2. Influenza is incredibly contagious for the birds. One sick bird can wipe out your whole flock. I hate to hear of birds being killed instead of just quarantined.
I like that you are not afraid to eat meat. Eggs are a "superfood", IMO. Lots of good protein, vitamin rich, useful fats. I doubt seriously Eggs will be $9 a dozen. You may be limited on how many you can buy, like toilet paper at the beginning of the pandemic. That's in large part due to panic hoarding. Or people who bought large amounts and then tried to rob their neighbors by selling it at high prices.
It's important not to panic in hard times. The Greatest Generation saw world wars. The fall of empires. The Great Depression. The Spanish Flu. They survived with dignity and a sense of community. I'd hate our legacy to be one of panic and selfishness.
Stay strong everyone. Keep your faith and your wits. We will need the support of community if times really get hard.

  3. I've eaten one meal a day all my life. I'm 53. I saw a medical study that said you should really only eat one meal a day, and keep your body on the brink of starvation, but not starving. I already figured this out ages ago. I noticed that A LOT of HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS lived into their 90s. I mean A LOT. I figured that by eating one meal a day, and yes I know that didn't even get that. That's not the point really. Your body uses EVERYTHING you take in, and thus you won't have built up clogged arteries, kidney stones, gall stones etc….well that's exactly what this medical study said. It's only common sense IMO. Every other animal on earth basically eats once a day. So long as you get what your body needs, AND IT WILL TELL YOU. You will crave salt if your body needs salt, you will crave certain foods if you need iron and etc….listen to your body. It's fine to snack. I do. I've never weighed over 125 lbs. I'm 5 ft. 5 inches and 53. It won't kill you to eat once a day. It's actually good for you. Tell'em Rob.
OH…and my bad. I had no idea you literally were self sustaining and had a little off grid home. I actually thought you lived in the pop up camper. See….I bought a used on over in Missouri last Oct. It's work in progress. I was wondering how easy or hard it was to get by in a pop up in the winter, or weather. You and I live in the same weather zone. I'm in NE Oklahoma. Anyway…lot's of Tyson Chicken Farms in SW Mo.

  4. I made sure to stock up not only on food and water .. but ELECTROLYTES: sea salt, potassium, calcium and magnesium. These are gonna keep you alive when you decide to fast or go long periods without eating. Even though you have a lot of food. It’s good for the mind body and spirit to fast regularly as well as fast intermittently. needless to say this will REALLY make your food supplies last waaayyyyy longer.

  5. Oh! I've been sold on canning for over a year..Taking inventory f jars and lids today . Getting more lids tomorrow . Got chicken pork n bacon in freezer . Going to start canning up as soon as I can. I just wish my daughter was on board. Limited supply of cat food here but did pick up some today. Gas prices down about $.50 per gal today .

  6. I've been reading up on Jerusalem artichokes. They are very similar to a potato, but are safe for people that have problems with potatoes, like diabetics for instance. One you plant them, you will continue to get crops every year. They also thrive in all sorts of soil. Thought I would mention it, in case Carolyn was interested in a very easy, nutritious addition to the pantry. She's probably already looked into this, lol!!

  7. Question about the berkey. Pure spring water that comes from a spring in the mountain, which is where I get my drinking water. Anyway, I do have a berkey for my coffee my well water isnt good to drink. Does the berkey remove all those minererals we need? Thanks Rob..
