In October, 2021, we retired early at age 50 in N. America, and moved to Portugal. We sold everything, and downshifted to our “Second Half of Life.” We are here on Madeira Island, Portugal. We hope you find our videos both helpful and inspiring as you pursue your “Second Half of Life.”

If you are looking for a real estate or civil lawyer here in Funchal, Madeira, we have a great recommendation. He has been a local lawyer in Funchal for decades and is well-respected – a true gentleman. We used him to purchase our ‘Vila Doce’ here on Madeira, Portugal – come for a tour: and see our closing costs:

  1. I know you miss your kids, but from my little experience, you will be called back when you have grandchildren. I live about 6 hours driving from my parents and I have a 2 year old daughter now. I never missed this distance before I had kids. But after that, I did not find trust in anyone but my parents to help me sometimes. They still live in another city but they come every month for help and it was necessary because I didn't want to hire anyone else to be with my kid. It was really very hard without them. So, don't worry about that now because sooner than you expect you will be back again. For now, just enjoy your free time. (I am wondering if I will have any free time again after my daughter rs)

  2. Exactly- I tell my friends, not to follow the kids everywhere they go- Let them be independent-
We have four grown up kids – One lives on West Coast, one on East Cost, one in Mid-West and one in Europe- We try to meet with them two-three times a year, either at home or some where outside of the US for a vacation together- It is sometimes hard because of conflicting schedules, but can be done- We came back a couple of weeks ago from Europe and everyone managed to be there- This was intensive time together for 17 days- Then we meet for thanksgiving and in December for family time together- It is fun- They follow their own plans in between as well- This will not be any different when we move to Portugal😎

  3. Great Video! Thank you for sharing the fear factor, it’s so true. I saw a sign in this video, a very important sign. You stood tall and sniffed a Plumaria. I’ve been growing them for 20 years, all different colors as they were my moms favorite….so thank you for showing me they are present in Madeira. My fear is moving abroad alone without knowing a soul. Of course liquidating assets is not a lightly taken task.

  4. Great video guys! Loved the Wedding Crashers reference. Fantastic information on parents failing to launch over the fear of not being near their children. All good points non how not overthink a move!

  5. nice click bait. All your fans know you were not wrong. I'm moving out there with my mom in January. After we file our taxes. Everything is done except for our d-7. We are so excited we can barely contain ourselves. we should have done this sooner. Better late than never! If i see you walking around all step up and get your autograph. Lol

  6. "Nothing that's done can't be undone" is such a great philosophy! We're in the reverse situation where the young 'uns are looking to move abroad and figuring out how we handle leaving behind aging family members. Doing the math on quality time really gives you a different perspective on how time matters more than distance. By retiring early, we could actually take 2, 3, 4 weeks to devote exclusively to visiting family and friends which isn't possible when juggling job and other responsibilities.

  7. Great video and I totally agree! I look at it that I am saving them the humongous task of getting rid of everything we own and selling our home & cars and they have a cool place to visit. The best part is the kids having a good attitude about us moving, and we are all just a plane ride away. Win-win!

  8. Hey Doug and Monique, I processed what you were saying earlier in 2022. It wasn’t easy….however, I took a similar approach to what Monique espoused! We raised both of our children to be self sufficient! So far, it has worked wonders! Won’t go into the details! I did recently tell my Son he be coming to Portugal right after we move to make sure he Approved of what Dad has done! Will be asking my daughter soon as well. Getting them involved is something I have always done! JP

  9. "We are citizens of yhe world"! Love that!! I totally agree with your perspective and great attitude! So, this reminds me of how so many people (most of them don't even have a passport) wonder how I can leave the US and I wonder how someone can never have traveled outside of the US! OK, living in Europe might not be for everyone…That I understand! One reason we bought our house is so friends and family can come visit and you are right about the quality time making up for regular Sunday dinners!!

  10. You make the same points as I always think about. Our youngest is in her final year of grad school in Boston, with a flexible schedule–so she and my wife spend more time now on video chats than when she lived less than 2 hours away as an undergrad. For us, once it's beyond an hour drive, there really isn't that much difference in how often we would get together with our adult kids–and we can always move closer to one of the three if that's needed in the future.

  11. This video came at the perfect time! It's the biggest hurdle for us leaving the US. Our kids are 35, 31 and 30 and our grandkids are 15, 6, 4. The hardest part is the grandkids, not being there for soccer games, ballet recitals, etc.

  12. Loving your video posts and your advice is highly valuable. I'm subscribed! I have lived almost 2 years in the Algarve and will be visiting Funchal Sept 10th thru 15th and would appreciate any fine restaurants you might recommend.

  13. "Hey Ma! Can I get some meatloaf?" LOL! In all seriousness, this video was exactly what I needed to see–hubby and I are struggling with this exact same situation with our kids even though we're years from retirement in Madeira yet.

  14. Agree totally! My husband (Italian) and I moved to Italy from Canada, after living there for over 43 years. He immigrated to be with me… and now I have immigrated to be with him in this new phase. Have lived here now for 5 years and regret nothing. Your outlook is similar to ours. Enjoy the next chapter in this book of life!
