South America has produced some of the greatest ever players in football history. Many South American players have played for the best teams in the game. But rarely do players make a move directly from South America to elite-level clubs. But why?

As Jon Mackenzie explains most players need a stepping stone club to take them to the next level. Illustrated by Henry Cooke.

  1. The truth is the English swear their league is the best but their league is the best because the best players from all over the world play there not because the English players make the league the best in the world. very few English players play in the top teams in the PL as constant starters. If English players were as good as the PL is then they would have more world cups. The world cups won by European teams have been by different countries all around. Italy, Spain, Germany, France. None of these are English and very few of the players that made up the World Cup winning teams for each of these countries played in the premier league. The truth is depending on the type of football you enjoy watching the "best" league in the world is subjective and all about personal preference.

  2. I thought the video would be about Europe as a whole, but it was just about PL. This "rule" does not seem to apply to the rest of Europe, Serie a and La Liga had several players who came directly from South America to their leagues, Pato, Thiago silva and Kaka in Milan, Marcelo, Casemiro, Vini Jr, Rodrygo in Real Madrid. I believe this is an English exclusivity of not going directly to South America.

  3. In my opinion I don't think that the Portuguese league is a "Smaller step up in league quality" in comparison to the Brazilian league, the clubs are way better today than 4 or 5 years ago.
    But great video!!

  4. This video is just to grab clicks.
