Welcome to a beautiful Riverland in Portugal, where I live off-grid and work with my own two hands to transform an abandoned land into a self-sustaining homestead. This week I share the reality of struggling with living so rural… Thanks for being here and let’s enjoy the summer 🙂

I'm feeling so THANKFUL for all your support!! 🧡It is so lovely to be reminded that we are never alone, and I will go through the messages with time, checking out the links you sent me and also thanks for offering to come and help! Yay, have a great day! 🦎🌻
Thanks for this video Maya. Oh humans! You run here and there looking for ''Atlantis''. How long? Green grass, woodlands, and sea views doesn't fill the void in your soul. You were designed to have a relationship with the creator of those things.
You cannot ignore God and have life. In His desperation to reach you, He sent His one and only son, innocent like a lamb, to die on a cross like a criminal, to reach you.
Maya, listen to me, if you can find him, If you can find Jesus Christ, then all of the mysteries of life, all the conspiracies deployed by governments, the military industrial complex, dishonest science and scornful friends for thousands of years, to bury this truth will become clear. Then you will find life in this life and the next, because I am not asking you to believe a fairy tale, but the Truth that can be investigated, read and reasoned with. I hope this message reaches you in your soul Maya.

I'm afraid you are facing the reality of property ownership in Portugal: hard work & hardship. Repeat & repeat & repeat.
The undergrowh needs to be cut twice, sometimes three times a year. Never ending job. And you also need a good source of income to spend on it.
That's why so many properties in Portugal were abandoned, you need to earn money elsewhere to be able to maintain a property like yours, and most properties don't give back any income, not even enough to pay the annual local tax.
But if you haven't passed a winter in your property yet, you have only experienced the "easy life".
Winters in Portugal can be cold & damp, your property seems like a damp trap. Renovating it will be more expensive than building a brand new house, and it'll never have the confort of modern insulation, and will require permanent maintenace, ask any builder, they'll give you a quotation for free.
You said you borrowed money to buy it, and I can tell you, you'll need at least 100,000 Euros to renovate it. More if you have to pay someone to carry all materials by hand, from the road.
By comparison, building a new house with all mod cons, can cost around 500 Euros per square meter, depending on choice of materials.
It's a big project. Sometimes just take small steps. And wear a hat! I've lived in pt for over 25 years and I know what the weather does to your skin. The sun causes skin cancer if you don't protect yourself. You have a beautiful place!
I see there on the trees ivy (hedera helix) which you cut on the bottom. This ivy is not bothering usually tree they coexist. Advantage of leaving ivy alive on the tree is that ivy will stay green in the winter and it love shade. I have this on my birch trees for last 15 years and both plants are fine. It s roots are only cling on surface of the tree not going to heartwood. I can imagine that such enormous work is overwhelming. Perhaps there will be one time I could come to Portugal to find my place and perhaps also help you a bit as volunteer 🙂
Hermosos paisajes !! Si sientes que es demasiada tierra, considera vender una parte y así tendrías vecinos. Saludos desde el norte de México.
Also another lady you tube person who’s on her own is Portugal from scratch, she’s very funny 😄
Hi Maya another you tube couple in your area are Luke and Sarah’s off grid life, they are so lovely, I’m sure you’d get on 😊
Mulher linda e lutadora, parabéns.
Hallo Maya schade das der filme nicht auf Deutsch ist…
One day at the time Maya ! we always have those days…do little realistic to do lists that you can tick off slowly…You are a very brave and hard working girl !! Well done so far !
Quando te sentires sozinha sabes onde podes vir conversar em Português! 😁
Alcohol and/or class A/B drugs is what most of us use to help cope with things.
I'm not recommending any of these but it's the reality for the majority of people.
I am working my way through a bottle of Jameson whiskey whilst I watch and thoroughly enjoying myself.
Thanks for your content, I think you're great.
Hello Maya, it is always good to get things out in the open. And explaining to others that life alone in the woods
is not always happy and fun. Maybe find some others in your area that have moved there and see if they have tips.
Also left a comment in another earlier video but just wanted to say again maybe invest in a woodchipper to make
your own mulch and get a chainsaw for firewood. And I wonder if you thought about photography because you have such
a beautiful place. Anyway I hope you will enjoy and take care of yourself.
Optimism meets realism
Greetings Maya,
I just found your channel and want to share how impressed I am with you! Embrace your feelings and they are real…take breaks, and reflect on your vision. I hope to sell everything and do something like you have done. I’m interested in Spain and Portugal. What part of Portugal is this? I would love to find riverfront property.
Great video Maya,
So glad that you've started a patreon and reaching out for volunteers etc this will help massively! Also you're bound to get down from time to time we all do and you do have a big task, however you have done LOADS more than most people would have done and on your own! It's Amazing! So don't be hard on yourself! You'll get it done in no time at all Im sure and however long each project takes its creation fantastic content that will I'm time earn you money and that can go towards the farm also so it's a win win, "Rome wasn't built in a day" as the saying goes! So just enjoy the experience and I know being on your own can be lovely at times of you're a people person I totally get that, but it won't be for long I'm sure and in the meantime just use that alone time/turn it to your advantage/use the freedom.
Stay strong you got this! 👍💪❤️
Cheers from London England 👍😎🏴
Maya, your an architect. Get creative with what Nature and Portugal and the history around you has given you and is right in your face. Create your destiny, you chose to be where you are when you bought the property. With Patrion , buy a chainsaw and safety gear, enquire with the local government office if you can have beavers, cut down the eucalyptus for money and plant local species or redwoods that help stop the fires in the future, connect with the community and ask for help, rent out your land in parcels as you clear for grazing and permaculture, help and local advice is there, you only have to ask xx
Looking good you are going to have a big burn pile
buy a stiht GTA26 mini pruner battery chainsaw – will make life a lot easier
You live in a nice pace. Land maintenance takes a while to get it under control. But your place is rewarding. Your young and have still the power. Take it one at a time. I dont Know which place you are living. But there are nice things to do You can join walking groups to learn the land. Thats what I did….and living nice in a remote place. Enjoy the good living in Portugal its a great place to be.
Hello Maya! 😀
