THIS is what Icelandic Wind did to our Reykjavík Apartment – Storytime!

Iceland is known for its volatile weather. Wind and snowstorms are to be expected. However, I never expected that the wind here would damage our apartment in the way I explain in this video. Let me know in the comments if you like storytimes like this and I can share more fun, bizarre, and fascinating tales.

  1. Low pressure outside and high pressure inside; the same reason people get sucked out of airplanes if they open the door while in flight. In New Orleans where they have lots of hurricanes, I think they open other windows a little bit to level out the pressure. You might look into that for your next windy time. Have others in Iceland experienced this same window popping event?

  2. Jewells, Its interesting to listen to you explain your brush with mother nature. You give it a more intriguing twist to the story line. It was funny seeing your contractor standing on a chair to fix the ceiling. Hope everything will work out after all. Did the Insurance cover the wind damage? Mano (Baltimore)

  3. Oh my gosh, that's crazy! It's too bad there isn't a parking lot video showing it happen that would be very cool to see. I'm so glad there wasn't any additional damage…just wow, you got so lucky!

  4. Oh my gosh! That could have been so much worse with all your cool stuff exposed to the elements. Glad that you and your things are okay.

I’ve heard about Iceland’s fierce winds. Coming from Southern California, we have winds that can push over trucks on overpasses. But no windows have ever been sucked out!

Has reforestation of Iceland helped to slow the serious wind situation?

  5. What a blessing – no one was hurt and no damage to your things! When we lived on the base, we had some military aircraft get blown around and the Marines used to escort kindergartners to school when it was bad. The saying was that the fence around the base was to stop the kids from being blown out into the lava fields 😂

  6. Girl wind is one of my most feared effects of nature. I live in a desert and the monsoon storms scare me. We’re only talking about 75 mph winds. I can’t even imagine your winds 😳 . Very interesting though 🥰

  7. That was a really good story of life in the North which people in the the West generally don't recognize. I lived in Greenland for a year (I am Danish) and not much wind in that area. But now and the a major storm came up, and it was so windy that I had to cling unto poles and what ever to stand om my feet. Most people think that it is just another fishermans story.. All the best, 🙂

  8. Wow! What a wind story. Thanks for the warning. Hope it calms down when we visit but so glad everyone was safe and caused no damage to your belongings. When we built our house we were told by the architect that when we got hurricane warnings (June thru November) in Hawaii , to open our front windows a little and the back windows so that the air could pass through. We used to always tape our windows in an X so that the glass wouldn’t shatter too much.
Best wishes on the progress of your new place.

  9. I know the feeling of wanting to stay indoors durng an Icelandic storm! I once drove to Stykkishólmur in the west of Iceland and stayed in an apartment next to the hospital. We were warned of a storm approaching. The snow storm with strong winds lasted for three days. Nobody was allowed to leave their home because it was too dangerous. I was on the first floor of the building but couldn't see outside because of the snow drifts. I had never experienced anything like it. When the storm passed, I heard that people were arriving at the hospital on skis and in snowmobiles. When I finally went outside, the snow plows had been out and some of the snow drifts were well over twenty feet. The worst part was when the snow started to melt. Looking forward to seeing you move into your new home!

  10. It must have been a downdraft! Almost like a tornado. We had one that came thru our street yrs ago. I could have sworn a tornado came thru the area (same distruction) but when the meteorologist came thru they said a "down draft"!! The wind comes down hard & spreads out. Tops of trees were missing, roofs missing or destroyed. It was wild. Glad no damage to furniture & other things moved into the apt. Enjoyed the story time

  11. Wow! That's interesting. You had some tornado force wind. I'm from Florida but lived in Oklahoma a number of years. Tornado wind will pick up and move mobile homes, roofs off of houses, houses, cars, cows, etc. They always tell you on the news not to go near the windows. And what happened to your window is an example of that. I'm glad that no one was hurt and there was no damage to your belongings. I hope the remodeling of your apartment goes well. Stay safe and many blessings to you and your loved ones.

  12. 😮😲😳😱😱😱 Oh Jewels…!!! I am glad no one or thing was injured or worse.

I would like to hear about the process of buying an apartment. In the USA (as you know) we rent not buy apartments. Are those apartments similar to condominiums in the USA, but are called apartments all over the world except the USA? Thank you.

  13. Wow! Unbelievable that the window AND frame got sucked out. Never heard of that except in tornadoes as you mentioned. Thank goodness there was no additional damage. BTW, congrats on the new apartment. The more stories the better.

  14. Wow! The last time I was Iceland, there was a storm that cancelled all flights to N America. We didn’t know until we got to the airport. We decided to go to the hotel across the road from the airport. We literally couldn’t walk across the street, it was so windy! The hotel was a 3 minute walk away🤷🏽‍♀️ We had to take a taxi to cross the street. Iceland wind is no joke! 💨

  15. very likely that someone left window open somewere in the apartment that created the pressure and blow out the window
there is nothing else i can think of that culd do that on the opposite side of the storm

  16. i landed in KEF once in december just before the very start of a blizzard. Like a genuine everything on road.is is red blizzard and on silly enough to be on the road is moving at 10km/hr because you cannot see past your headlights. Somehow made it to Blue lagoon (thankfully I actually know the roads a bit) and the winds in lobby sounded like they were going to rip the window out there! I was never so happy to pay for a hotel room in my entire life. And will likely never stay in that nice a place ever again! 🤣
