A big family house is the scene where a middle-aged man talks to his deceased wife and acts like they are still living together. This man’s brother who lives in the same building is very concerned about this development. The brother’s family constantly hears him speaking to his wife and they ask a family friend (who is also a well-known psychiatrist) for help. The psychiatrist arrives to make a diagnosis and after a couple of conversations with his patient he decides that he doesn’t actually need any medical help. To express his gratitude the “patient” presents his wife’s painting “Two Owls” to the doctor. The second story takes place during the Second World War. A Soviet general is found dead in his lover’s apartment by his wife. The wife also finds the painting “Two Owls” in the same apartment, a painting that previously belonged to their family. The protagonist of the last story is a young, 21st century, urban man. He is just about to do something that’s totally beyond his morals. His girlfriend’s family has discovered the only painting that’s left from their grandmother’s oeuvre, but the current owner doesn’t seem to care about family values and is not willing to sell “Two Owls”.
