Top 25 Groceries In A Retirement Budget (And What They Cost Living In Madeira, Portugal)

Retirement budget Grocery Haul! Everyday items, everyday cost of living. We researched what the Top 25 grocery item purchases were, and then headed down to our local grocery supermarket store here in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal for a closer look at what these same food items cost, for our early retirement budget. If you are researching retiring to Portugal, or Madeira in particular, and looking at how far your retirement finances will go in your retirement budget, then this video is for you! We don’t necessarily buy these particular items, so it’s not an exhaustive, “best-value” list. Some items may be less or more expensive than what you are used to where you live now, but overall we find groceries much less expensive here in Portugal. Join us for this Deeper Dive into groceries – hopefully it gives you an idea! 😉

  1. I saw polvo (octopus) in a freezer at Christmas time, looked like an alien! Seriously. We have Pingo, Continente and Lidl within walking distance. It seems to us Lidl has a wider selection and is usually more inexpensive. We sometimes walk further to the much larger Auchan and get a cheap Uber to return home. Very few items I'm missing in Portugal compared to the UK. We are very fortunate to have so many places that sell sushi plus the quality of fish and seafood is on the next level!

  2. Enjoyed it – especially because you went to Pingo Doce, still my favorite Portuiguese supermarket chain though I am looking forward to LIdl's arrival. But you get two demerits. American-style white bread? And frozen fish in Madeira? 😉 Oh my. Also, I found that Delta coffee (usually my favorite Portuguese brand) in a pouch is pretty awful.

  3. Excellent video and thank you for the Grocery Experience
    Since landing in Madeira
Have you noticed a big increase in the cost of items and what item has seen the largest increase

    Cheers from Andrew and Monica

  4. Hey you guys,
I read on another couples’ channel that they had a very challenging time furnishing and decorating their home in Madeira bc they reported very few island/local shops for furniture and home decor, and few sources that deliver to the Island.
    Do you agree ?
    Thanks much,
    Lynda Peterson

  5. Here in Coimbra I have this supermarket Pingo Doce at 300 meters, I use it nearly every other day. Then I use Auchan & Continente less, but it´s a matter of distance.

  6. Great video guys. Will be interesting to see what happens when Lidl enter Madeira which has just been confirmed but supermarkets are freely available in most locations and well stocked

  7. Thanks , finally a channel that is fun and talks about the nuts n bolts of a life style change. Could you guys spend some time on the CBI program in Portugal Madeira . I see that Portugal has changed its locations that qualify for CBI but its vague . Does Madeira wualify? Maybe the pros and cons or why you chose to go With the D7 visa over CBI. Thanks

  8. Hi guy's, that's funny as we are finally on our Portugal trip and currently in Lisbon, we are staying next to a Pringo Doce and were checking out the prices this very morning!! We leave for Madeira on Monday, staying for two week's, and we would love to meet up with you two to buy you a beer or coffee if you are available. As mentioned before, we are looking to retire in Portugal and checking out different places. Best regards to you both!

  9. Wow, not a single dark leafy green or cruciferous vegetable, neither legumes, nuts or seeds or whole grains. But a ton of products that aren't even real foods. Retirement won't last long eating the top 25:( thanks for the video!!

  10. Kg, liter, etc., I understand kg but not ml.. Nice to have a law enforcement officer monitoring 1,000 kg vs 1 kg 🙂 I’d like to taste a banana from Madeira though and see how it compares to my Chiquita banana from Central America 🙂

  11. This is a "Deeper Dive," a closer look into the cost of the Top 25 groceries according to The Google 😄 normally purchased, and their comparatives here in Madeira, Portugal . Of course it's not an exhaustive comparison, but we hope you find it a little interesting! Cheers!
