Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

  1. 13:10…basically you don't. What we call braseiras are very dangerous and still today they are used as a cheaper option to keep warm during the colder days. The fact Portuguese houses have generally bad insulation doesn't help either. Almost every winter we hear in the news whole households being poisoned by carbon monoxide due to these damned things.

  2. I’d turn that second living room into a bedroom and ensuite it would make a fantastic master bedroom and it’s well big enough for a wardrobe in the main area and what is now the bedroom would be the perfect size for an ensuite.

  3. I would turn the ground floor into a kitchen, and dining space. the back of it into a food storage area for drinks as well. it's probably nice and cool down there.
I can't remember how many bedrooms there were, but I would turn one floor into a living space, little office area. the rest sleeping rooms and add a second bathroom. Open everything up and keep it simple…as to not take away the charm and character of the building.

  4. If you are planning on AirB&B for this house, the small room on the top floor that is now a bedroom would give an extra sleeping space, it could be a fold up bed in a walk in closet kind of thing, just allows more people to sleep in the space for rentals.

  5. The windows above each door are called Fanlights (that is their name in Britain). The purpose is purely to allow natural daylight through from rooms with windows, into rooms without. I your house's case, I imagine this is to let daylight into the hallway. Debs

  6. I would make it a Air B & B and use it as a retirement project. I see you have Yorkshire Tea, Good on you. That little room I would make into a closet, sitting room. With a coffee station. :pve you guys. Yorkshire Girl in USA

  7. I'm in awe about the beautiful rugs that came with the village cottage. The whole cottage is devine and has tons of potential as time and funds allow. Keep us posted as another renovation happens. Best wishes, j ♥️🇺🇸🌻🌻🌻

  8. Greetings from CA, USA! I was so fascinated by this charming house and the treasures you found in the attic. I emailed a retired Portuguese language teacher about it all. The braseira brought back memories about her family huddled around it for warmth. She said her brother learned to knit because that was what all the ladies were doing! Other times, they would play cards.
HOWEVER, she cautioned about the carbon monocide danger. Due to this danger and the tragic deaths that had ocurred, the use of the braseira was stopped. Best wishes, Patricia

  9. They have electric heater that you can put in the table warmer instead of coals. I have and antique table with the same whole for the coals. I bought the electric heater and we use it a lot in the winter.

  10. I've already posted, but with what is happening in this world at the moment, it's great to see what people are doing. These videos help a lot of us to know, investigate, and think carefully about what we can do with our lives, currently and in the future. These videos make us ask questions! So thanks for giving us a starting Block!

  11. Love the bathroom reno looks great 😍 👌I would move your pool table into the old shop front and add a bar area and home theatre. Would be awesome for a rental to have a games room 🙂

  12. What to do with the spaces? It depends on whether you want to turn it back into a home, then the hairdresser space could be a living room, or a bunch of flats. Then the other floors need at least their own bathrooms and a communal kitchen or their own kitchen and bathroom spaces.

  13. I know the trend is for light, bright, spacious bedrooms, but I’d this is going to be a rental or vacation home, I would not waste space on a room you use just for sleeping. It can be very comforting to be "snug as a bug" in a small cozy space. Feels very safe and secure. If a small skylight window is possible, looking at the stars from your snug little nest can be awesome.

  14. "Portuguese size its like a little hobbit door" ouch a short joke aimed at an entire nation, I know your a bit taller than most but that a bit harsh.
FYI the average adult height in Portugal is 5'-8.5" (1.739 m) and Tolkien's Hobbits were 3'6" (1.067m).
