Visit Portugal | 1 week road trip Faro – Evora – Porto

This week we are travelling from Faro up to Porto on one of Portugals best road trips. Taking in the magical towns of Evora, Serpa, Porto and Aveiro the Venice of Portugal, as well as some fantastic countryside.

We visit the world most beautiful book shop, cross a spectacular bridge, and have our minds changed when we enjoy some port tasting at Grahams port house. Thats with out even mentioning the chapel of Skulls, 5000 dead people bones stacked up to make a church, gnarly!!

We release new videos every Sunday so please make sure you SUBSCRIBE and join us for the adventure. We’d also really love to hear from you so leave us a comment, let us know what you think, and if you’ve got any bright ideas about how to create a van perfect for a family, we’re all ears!

  1. Watching over a year later and it’s bringing back memories of our trip to Portugal and Madeira, beautiful tiles buildings and people, was the Tom Sawyer book the idea for the new baby’s name, Sawyer.

  3. Pastel de nata or amendoeira mmmm. Sangria a must . Buildings with the most tiles on the outside are the wealthiest or that’s how it used to be. You certainly are living the life making the most of it . Little Crusoe has always been such a good boy all down to your calmness and out and about getting fresh air well done my dear friends .

  4. Evora is quant the streets are lovely and the chapel of bones sone of the skulls are so tiny aren’t they, did you get the cassette recording in English , well worth it . The chapel of bones at alcantarilha is very tiny only two people can stand just inside the doorway . I find most villages in alentejo Algarve or circal and so many with historic information underground spas etc you just never get fed up , and everywhere is so green considering how little rain we get , well actually we get a lot more now but years ago we were lucky to get 11 occasions in a years with sun in between showers. You have a lot more experiences believe me.

  5. Hello beautiful family, i was surprised by this video 🥰😊 this is were i am actually. 14km to road to Spain. You have be in the best place to be on Baixo Alentejo. So grateful to know you have visited us ❤❤ thank for the visit to Serpa. Big hug enjoy the new home on Portugal, you are inspiration for me. 😘😘

  6. I found your vlog about a month ago, just as you are settling in to your Portuguese farm house. I love it and am now trawling happily through all your previous vlogs. Lots of love an happiness.

  7. I love Portugal, so far I have been to Lisboa, Cascais, Sintra, Coimbra, Figueira da Foz and Porto. I was considering to move there when I retire, but the real estate is more expensive in the places I would like to live… so I'm considering Spain, basque region, around Bilbao, as it has much to offer to my lifestyle and needs. Amazing video, as usual 🙂 I'm glad I've discovered your channel

  8. As they say John and Tara, ‘better late than never’! A fascinating and lovely vlog on a country that I would like to visit. Those pastries look delicious. Just a point on the birds, I think that you will find that they are common swifts, since they are shaped like a small scythe and tend to scream as they fly overhead In search of insects! They are most probably still with you in Southern Africa at this time, which is the magic of bird migration. Do keep up the superb photography and informative commentary!👍😊

  9. No need to ask if you did this part of Portugal justice?? Of course you did… I have been to Fatima from Lisbon. Unfortunately it was a very quick pilgrimage so didn't get to enjoy it like you guys. What you filmed certainly is beautiful and so crisp and clean. That bookshop was quite something too. John's taste in bridge architecture is spot on. It is a superb structure. A mix of Sydney harbour bridge and trestle bridges I have seen in the Americas. Of course the weather helped with the picturesqueness of the place. As always a quality Yt video. Good on ya. God Bless you till next time.

  10. 19:39: Ahhhhhhhhhh!

May I ask a few technical questions? You seem to use your phones to video everything. I assume you’re shooting on 4K which eats up memory. May I ask what size memory your phones are are, and if you ever wish you had more?

I ask because I’ll be upgrading my phone soon and my current iPhone’s memory is far too low for any decent video work. It’d be helpful to know how much memory you find sufficient.

Also, may I ask what video editing software you use and if you edit on a laptop or tablet?

Thanks. I’ve asked a few questions recently so I feel guilty asking. You’ve got plenty on your plate.

  11. In Lisbon don't miss Mãe d'Água. The major water reservoir at the end of the aqueduct. It is rather a unique building, made for water. Go to the upper terrace to enjoy also the view. It is close to Rato metro station

  12. Do not miss Ovidos on your way to Sintra. You can also visit the Batalha Monastery

Mosteiro da Batalha. In Sintra is a must besides the Palace of la Pena, the visit to the Parque Nacional da Pena and above all the Park and Palace of Monserrate

(Parque e Palácio de Monserrate) following the steps of Lord Byron and nearby the Quinta da Regaleira, palace & gardens with mysterious underground passages, a chapel & museum. The route: road N 375- Rua Barbosa du Bocage, from Sintra to Colares is a lovely ride through the sites and gardens. From Colares you can go to the cliffs at the beach of Adraga and see the dinosaur 110 million year old footprints lie in the cliffs which mark

the southern edge of the beach. The footprints originate from Cretaceous

period and there are 66 separate different tracks of varying sized. The

majority of the footprints (51 prints) follow set pathways which due to

geological movements appear to be heading vertical up the cliff face. The

footprints are best viewed at night when they are illuminated. If I find your e-mail I send you a guide that I made.

  13. Another great video. Portugal seems to have so much to offer. Another country to add to the list but specifically the port tasting… and we love port 😃We managed to get out overnight in our van at the weekend in sunny Cornwall too, so very happy here. See you next week!!

  14. Dear John, Tara and Crusoe,
The sunshine on those cobbled stones amid the aqua-duct in Serpa made Crusoe a bit more fussy than normal… seems like he is not accustomed to the heat. Did you know that we travelled with our 6-month old baby Helena all around the world, non-stop until she was 3 years old? One trick I would like to share, is the "pillow on the knee" method of putting baby asleep. Lie baby across your lap on a pillow, and rock your feet up & down. This is useful in planes, trains, the bus or even in the hotel.
The bones in the chapel of Evora is certainly unusual "art deco" from centuries ago. Also the rest of Evora is a charming place and it is so enjoyable to see, with so few people in the narrow streets the architecture pops in the scene.
Gondolas in Portugal. Wow, did not know about Aveiro. My wife Sandra and I have a dear affinity for gondolas, because we exchanged our wedding vows whilst sitting in a gondola on the Grand Canal in Venice! Will share pictures.
My mouth was watering at that pastry shop in Porto. That place is on my travel list of the future, since I have such a sweet-tooth. Thanks for introducing that magical book shop, just love the staircase and the interior. Can't wait for next Sunday for more of your adventures in Portugal.
Warm regards from Otto in Santiago

  15. Once again, a great video. I had a quiet giggle seeing Crusoe in the bookstore…….fast asleep, much like his grandfather (EAW) would be. Like grandfather like grandson! And oh by the way, 3 and half month year old…….was that the Port talking John??😂

  16. I admire the way how you are editing your videos, it’s like I’m there! It’s so tidy but at the same time exciting! Before your videos from Portugal I didn’t think much of it but now I really want to go there! Thank you for another adventure and I can’t wait to see another one! All the best for all three of you! ❤️

  17. I felt like I was there with you!!!! That must be the highest compliment to you, your videos, your sharing. I LOVE the cobblestone streets, aqueducts and ochre in Evora.

The bookstore in Porto must be one of the most GORGEOUS places in existence!!!! Breathtaking. Certainly never heard of that before. Thank you to the terrific trio: ) Hugs and love from Ohio, USA.

  18. Wow now this video was very interesting. The bone chapel reminded me a bit of the Catacombs I visited in Paris. The library was just beautiful and then sample tasting the port, what more can we ask of you, enjoyed it very much, thanks
