There’s no good English word for “saudade”, deep sorrow from loss of someone. I normally don’t feel Eurovision songs but this one uniquely spoke to me. My mother died six weeks ago.
This music speak about your grandfather died since two years.
Those lyrics gave me goosebumps! Thank you for reading them out in English <3! I love Maro as a musician for so many years now and I also think this song is amazingly beautiful. It represents the word "Saudade" so well.
The Celts did settle in Portugal too…
she lost her grandfather, her best friend (it was true) 🇵🇹
This was simply the best song … released in 2022 period
your outfit is gorgeous!!!
Extra info: isn’t about a breakup. She said she wrote this song about her grandfather
Oh my country ♥️. Portugal never ever sang in spanish. Saudade is the only Word in the world that doesnt have translation. Its close to Missing ,nostalgia
Maybe Spanish ????????????? are you high ????????????? And dont know that PORTUGAL is a country (beautiful one), and have nothing to do with spain???????????????????? jesus christ….ignorance is outside…
I would have dinner with you. You're great.
Her voice reminds me of great Lhasa de Sela
«… in portuguese or maybe in SPANISH» hehe you are about to lose all portuguese audience 🙂
this song is about Maro's Grandfather who passed away
the streamers came midway because this performance was after they won our national contest.
Saudade hasn't any kind of translation to other languages. It is a specific word/meaning from Portugal and the Portuguese/Portuguese speakers. It relates to the time of Discoveries when the sailors sailed from Portugal, leaving their families behind, and the feeling the mothers, sons, and wives had was more than a miss you. It was "Saudade," a strong emotion, coming from our most profound feelings when we lose someone when we don't see someone for a long, long time, more substantial than an "I miss so much"!
"SAUDADE" – Everyone has, but only the Portuguese has a specific word for it. It is one of the Portuguese words that there isn't any kind of translation to other languages.
SAUDADE is… SAUDADE!
Love your reaction
Amazing how you felt the kelt singing. I had the same feeling of connection with the tradicional music, NOT fado as some say, but the kelt root of our traditional music. Something about the high voices, the rhythm and clap of hands… interesting!
"Saudade" is a word that only exists in portuguese, It's basically the feeling of missing someone/something. So the translated lyrics ("longing, longing") don't really make sense
Very nice review 👏🏼 but as a portuguese I'd like to point out that there isn't an accurate translation to "saudade", it's very tricky to translate 🙈 the song actually points it out, there isn't a better word 😅
Saudade is a nostalgic state of missing something or someone mixed with the hope of having it back. it came from Latin for loneliness but it can be one of many Galician-Portuguese Celt tradition heritage (before Roman empire invasions). About the lyrics, in this case it's about the death of a family member (her grandfather) and what she feels… unfortunately shared by millions of people in recent times
Longing is NOT the translation/meaning of SAUDADE!
Sweet kind harmony , relax, music. Give us Peace, people in europe vote, in MARO.
♥️ happy Anniversary
Celtic Indeed. Portugal is a Celtic country and that is exactly what I felt
Fo me, this song shows a new generation with a very "Indigo" vibe to it. There is peace, softness and deepness. I think that we, the Portuguese are not very well understood most of the time. We have very deep feelings that sometimes cannot be translated into words or even into tears, Sometimes we feel so much pain that we cannot even cry or sometimes we feel a fist around the heart that make it difficult to breath. We carry the love and the strenght of our antcestors upon our shoulders and we always maintain a love/hatred relationship with the sea. We have a very special relationship with the elements (we feel that it is a part of our human nature) but out deepest passion lies in the sea. There were so many peple that died on shipwrecks, so many brave people that sailed the seas to discover new worlds… and we love beaches, rivers and the food that the waters offer us. Portuguese people have around 95 percent of water in their bobies and in their souls as well. I love being Portuguese! We are a nation of true poets.
Magnifique MARO 🤗 🥰 👏 ❤️
Someone asked me to define "saudade" … I "smile crying" …
About the music, it represents the cultural exchange and influences between the Portuguese and other peoples of the maritime colonies, Brazilian vibes, African rhythms, Asian mysticism with the influences of Iberian music (classical guitar and clapping)
It takes me back to the moment in 2009 when I lost my grandpa. This is so intense and the song is about everyday life! I hope the mainstream ESC fans will somehow appreciate this song and it will end up in the top 10!
love maro
Go Portugal 💚❤️🇵🇹
força Portugal 🇵🇹
One of my favs this year
Spanish?????? Your big mistake. We Portuguese has noting with spanish language. To sing in other language than ours…english or french…like some country who speeks the most known languages. Spanish is not a most known language and has noting with portuguese.
Portuguese are celtic. Remember one of the biggest celtic festivals is in the north of portugal and galizia…
I love the fact that you made a connection to Celtic folk song because although Portugal speaks a neo-Latin language due to being conquered by Rome, its essence and the "saudade" culture comes exactly from its Celtic roots (via the Gallaeci, Lusitani, Celtici, Turdulii and Conii peoples). The Fado music, for an instance, has this melancholy to it which is a direct reflection of the Celtic substract that lives on to these days within the Portuguese people, in their songs and, also, in their language. They sing about loss, about the longing of those that are gone and left to the sea. They play their traditional bagpipes, dance the "Dança dos Paus" (Stick Dance) and play the Caretos in the northern region. The relationship Portugal has with the sea is very similar that of the Irish people when they sing their folk songs. Portugal is a country of Celtic and Pre-Celtic origins and so you're completely spot on!! Love from Brazil. 💚
Beautiful, subtle, underplayed and stands out for that.
Saudade is a unique word which has no translation. Saudade is a very deep feeling that can make you feel a mix of feelings like joy or sadness or nostalgia or both for example. Sometimes it feels like a rollercoaster of feelings. It can be so many things.Saudade makes you travel through time, through moments, places, people that touched you heart and most of the time are no longer with you. I could write a more than a thousand words and still, they wouldn't be enough to explain. This song is a big tribute, so deep on its message, so simple yet so powerful
The north of Portugal is very much Celtic, she has a voice like Dido
MARO for the win! A proud portuguese here 😍
Saudade and love from 🇵🇹❤️👏👏
The song is about her grandfather who passed away. It's beautiful
Check for MARO singing Tears in Heaven, in a duet with Eric Clapton, on YouTube 🙌
Song on portuguese or maybe spanish language???? But why we would song in spanish language? In Portugal we speak portuguese not spanish… Sorry, but a person with a minimum culture level should know that your supposition it's a kind of strange…
Portuguese music have heavy celtic influence, specially in the North, it was like Britain and France a celtic land
They dont win becuse they are not naked like lady from spain. That is sad true.
Portuguese people have Celtic ancestors.
The song was written by MARO for her late grandfather, whom she had lost shortly before.
