  1. My suggestion is that you should contact ACP (Automóvel Clube de Portugal) and make sure you got the right information. ACP is the equivalent to AA/RAC in Uk. They deal with those matters. If possible, you should contact them personally, in one of their offices. Sometimes information is not correctly understood due to language difficulties.

  2. Oh my what a very difficult situation you find yourselves in. I am so sorry to hear how difficult this can be, especially as you had no information before you did all the beautiful work on the new van! Fingers crossed your next steps are not as complicated. Good luck. xxxx

  3. Oh heck…….that's definitely thrown a spanner in the works ☹️. Hopefully, all the hard work that you've done on Mungo will be much appreciated by the new owner. Fingers crossed 🤞 that things go smoothly from now on and no more hiccups to your Portugal plans

  4. It's all about taxes & insurance!
I used to live in Ireland, a colleague of mine, who was English, went to the UK to purchase a 50k BMW.

In Ireland back in 2006, there was a huge import tax on vehicles with large engines / newer cars. But if anyone could prouve their car was purchased 6 months prior to moving to Ireland, they wouldn't charge.

So he thought he could beat the system.
He obviously got caught and could not provide any information that he was living in the UK when purchased the car, etc.

The tax department fined him, 18k€, 33% of the car value in Ireland.

While I cannot remember exactly the numbers as it was 16years ago, you can trust me how expensive it was.

That being said, if he had a car accident while living in Ireland, his British car insurance wouldn't have paid.

As a French person, I believe our car insurances cover up to 90 days withing the EU.

  5. these stupid, stupid laws – they don't make any sense, except to make life more difficult for people. my ex husband shipped 2 light planes from Thailand and Dubai, a small tractor, a motorcycle and an old land cruiser to Portugal, 4 years ago. He flew another plane directly there. no problem with car and bike, but he's still fighting to get the planes licensed. one of them has floats to take off and land on his river, which is connected at his farm.

  6. Oh no. That is the worst nightmare I can imagine for you. All that work on the van, but I note your determination to crack on anyway. Well done BREXIT has not had one single benefit that I can see, but I have no desire to go down that alley. Fingers crossed your dreams come true you so deserve it. 😻😻

  7. Great, easy to understand, explanation on the 20 day rule when becoming a resident. Useful info, it seems unknown to many. Also good to know that a converted van/minibus can be hard to get approved for matriculation.

  8. Oh gosh Darren so many hurdles to overcome, an absolute pain in the posteria!, but as the saying goes " nothing worth while is ever easy " you tend to forget that every country has has its own specific rules and regs, but I think the same rule exists over here, you have to register an imported car in a certain amount of time, not sure how long you have got, otherwise it can be seized, but you and Elaine will get where you want to be in the end, and it will be worth it, don't let it get you down, sending you both best wishes 😎😎🖐

  9. It was so nice, anyway, to see you back on YouTube, Darren.
I hope you will manage with all the plans needed in order to be able to get to Portugal fully legally.
As such a great couple as you are, I am sure you will face little and big issues. See you soon posting more about your new home. Best of luck, Elaine and Darren

  10. Hi from Australia. I think I heard on Frankie off Grid (who found out that they were too late to matriculate their vehicle) that there is a way to get the process after the 20 days. I heard you say that the 20 days is for the TAX FREE period, the question begs to be asked – how much tax would you need to pay if you are outside of this period. Don't sell Mungo and make a big loss if it is a matter of paying tax for the matriculation process. Get in touch with a Portuguese lawyer who should be able to advise you correctly. Just a thought! I hope this helps.
