We moved in to our Portuguese Quinta

After three months of renovation and decorating we moved in to our house in Vieira de Leiria. The house still needs a lot of work, we have water coming into the kitchen every time it rains because we need to remove the roof extension and put guttering on the main roof. But the last two weeks there has been a lot of rain and so the roof work has been put on hold until the rain stops long enough for it to be safe to erect the scaffolding and get on top of the roof to put new ridge tiles.

In the meantime I need to finish painting the last room, which is going to be for visitors and a gymnasium. But what I really want to be doing is to be working outside, planting trees and making a vegetable garden. That time will come in due course.

This week I hope that we can erect some scaffolding and start removing the tiles from the extended roof to help direct the flow of the rain water away from the house until such time as the builder can erect the guttering. It is amazing that so many houses in Portugal don’t have this which contributes to the problem of damp inside the houses here.

  1. HELLO SUZI…THERE'S NOTHING LIKE HAVING A FIREPLACE…AND, YES, THAT ROOF NEEDS URGENT ATTENTION, YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO HAVE TO REPLACE YOUR KITCHEN CUPBOARDS OR REDO THE TILE…LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT INSTALLMENT…THE FURBABIES ARE ADORABLE…ALL THE BEST…🙏🏻;)

  2. Hey Suzi, I hope you are battening down the hatches! It is getting windy and wet here just east of Coimbra (we are house sitting and caring for some lovely dogs). You are on a fantastic journey, similar to ours. I think you have to take risks in life and leave your comfort zone and challenge one’s self, and that’s the way we grow as individuals. Good Luck with your renovations and connecting with nature.

  3. You can probably just re point the brick and keep the water out, we had a similar leak here in our Maltese townhouse for like 3 years lol we finally re pointed the wall and it's dry after the first few storms 🙂

  4. Hi Suzi , it looks like you are settling in well in your new dwelling , my first job would be to sort the leak in your kitchen, as the water will de laminate your kitchen units .I know Rome wasn’t built in a day , but like you say the rain is imminent 👍👍
