We're claiming our LIVING ROOM after 7 1/2 months of Self-Building our HOME & Portuguese Homestead

We’ve been living on a building site on our North Portuguese Homestead forever, it seems, and this week we’re claiming our living room as our main living space. We now have heat in the house, so it makes sense to spend most of our time in the main living space of our self-built house. While the living room design you’ll see here is not final. We think it’s a fantastic space to enjoy our house a bit more. The season is changing, and autumn is definitely setting in. So it means more time inside, especially as we return to freelancing.

41 weeks ago, we bought an abandoned farm in Tras-os-montes, North Portugal, and we’re building our dream house with a public garden, an ice cream kiosk, and our dream house optimized toward minimalist yet comfortable living. But we’re not just building a house – we’re bringing back to life an entire Portuguese Homestead and working on self-sufficiency. We left the Rat trace for a simple life in North Portugal. And this is a slice of our dream and a new simple life.

  1. Love that you both share a passion for vintage frames💞 The yellow sofa totally sets the vintage vibe amd makes those frames pop. Best of luck heading back to work. We love you guys!

Oh and the walnut trees really do look lovely in Autumn.🍂

  2. Having that space freed up and now able to relax is a game changer. Your achievement in such a short time is staggering.
Those recliners look so comfy. The minute I’d drop it back I’d be asleep. 😂
We’ll done guys! Great effort! 😎👍

  3. Really came together very good, congrats on reclaiming your living room. And you guys worked quick and the result is beautiful, job well done.🏡👏 Great designers choice of colors and the picture wall. We directly fell in love with your couch 🛋 did you buy it in Portugal? if so where? Keep up the good work👍

  4. Hi Sindy and Dan, What a triumph, your living area looks fantastic. The colours blend so well together. I will be honest i did not know if I would like it or not but i was wrong. I think the yellow sofa not only looks great and comfortable but is the perfect colour. You know what the red striped rug you have in front of the sofa is just right, it seems to tie everything together. Congrats. enjoy your cosy living space. Thanks for the great sots of the dogs. Mason was really hyper this week .I don't think you said what is happening next week, I guess that will be our surprise . Off to make Leek, Potato and Cauliflower soup, see you Sunday

  5. The living room is amazing I love the color choice of your accent wall. The color of that with your sofa really makes the whole thing "pop".
Please explain the twigs and wood in the jars with olive oil…. I'm thinking fire starters but I may be off base. You have every right to be proud of yourselves for your accomplishments ‼️

  7. Fab video guys! It’s lovely to see your eclectic taste in picture frames and furnishings!
Is that globe a drinks cabinet? My Auntie and Uncle had one when I was little in the mid 1970’s and I can remember thinking that it was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen!
Have a good week, I’m so happy that you are now warm and comfortable in the Autumn and Winter months!
    Laura ❤

  8. LOVE the colors! The sofa, too! The walls of the whole main floor of my house are painted a shade lighter than the blue color, so I may be a bit biased, LOL. 💕💕💕

  9. Looks amazing and soo cozy, well done. When you first finished the paint and had the white stripe i thought the stove would look great in that location but when you pulled the room together with the office area etc it works well ❤❤🥰🥰

  10. It is so special because you spent $0 to decorate. And it looks so nice. Making it more purposeful and ready to live in. Like the way you left the center unpainted giving it a more interesting look. The sofa looks like a nice spot for a nap. I'm all about the naps during the day. Such good ideas and workmanship. Great going guys!

  11. I really love the blend of contemporary and vintage in your living room, it looks so cozy and comfortable. It must feel like you are moving into another phase of your journey. Your sofa looks like you have brought the sunshine inside your home and suits your sunny personality perfectly Sindy. Well done guys xx 🏡🌟🙏💕

  12. Wow you must be thrilled……a place really feels like home when you add your personal things……it’s beautiful……design details are in my bones…..I love the way the white stripe on the coloured wall highlights the slope of the roof……

  13. Wow, looks amazing, I bet you are both so pleased with your living room! By the way, why did you put the wood in glass jars and put olive oil on it? Did I miss explanation? I've never seen that done before. 🙂
