  1. **I have a question, please** First I want to say thank you! Thank you for sharing. We're getting so much out of this, I hope it's worthwhile on your end as well. Now as for my question, these steps you took were no easy tasks. And so I'm wondering why Madeira and why Portugal? I can think of plenty of good reasons, but were there other contenders in your global search? Like, for instance, the other top 3 or top 5 contenders? It's such a big step, I'd rather leave no stone unturned than to realize afterwards there could have been a better fit. So if you don't mind sharing, since we like your way of handling things, what were your other top countries for consideration? Thanks and all the best!

  2. Enjoyed your video, thanks.
Madeira is a gem of a place to live, which after 53yrs living here as an expat Brit I can attest to, we had an amazing community of American friends here 70's through 80's a talented and creative group…still miss them, so glad to see more Americans settling here. ( I built a holiday home with my father here in 1969 married in 72 at 19, honeymooned and stayed, retired here ever since!
I dearly love the island and its people that have kept me safe and happy all these years, my son was brought up here (35 now) he also loves the Island. Need any advice, just ask, I am an artist and Botanist.

  3. Howdy, I have my visa interview early next month.
Although I don't need to decide anything until I have a visa (if I get one), I'm not sure about Funchal.
Every street has a gradient, supermarkets seem spread out (I don't drive), but I would like the warmth.
Where I used to live in mainland Portugal is colder, but has all the shops I need and is mostly flat.
Which to choose? Time will tell.

  4. I am 45 years old with very little set aside for retirement at this point. I have always been curious about the stock market and have witnessed some people who played the game right and retired early because they used the stock market. When I ask them, most said that they invested very little to start with, but their portfolio grew. I do have a significant amount of capital that is required to start up but I have no idea what strategies and direction I need to approach to help me make decent returns

  5. Wow you guys really are a great couple.
You study things together, examining and choosing, financially, Life and Living in Senior Times. And knowing what you will do the whole rest of Lifetime together.
What a truly wonderful place chosen, too.
This is a great post. So much to learn from your offering to viewers, sharing information. Thanks.

  6. Awesome video Alan. Hope you and your family are doing well. Relocating to Madeira in September. Would love to get together for a coffee or poncha. Stay safe and God bless.

  7. Thanks for the amazing scenery.. we have been in Madeira a few years back, made some tours crisscrossing the island and memories came flooding in following your road trip. Thanks for sharing these useful tips. shared it with my hubby so we can going through these things again….and yes with the spreadsheets I keep since he has non😅

  8. E cell entertainment information! Are you going to purchase a piece of property.? Or is it cheaper to just rent? Our country USA, is going downhill fast. If things go bad can you still get ss?

  9. Thanks Alan and Leslie! How is it going learning Portuguese? The reason I ask is that when we moved to Norway, 40+ years ago, and at the age of about 30, learning Norwegian was so exhausting. The worst period lasted about six months, from about six months after our arrival until about a year after our arrival. We thought we understood things better than we did, and there were numerous misunderstandings. Currently, we use Duolingo on a daily basis, to learn assorted languages, and even used it to learn some Portuguese before we visited Madeira in 2017. My better half probably spends an hour a day on languages. I put in about 15 minutes. In part, this is done to keep our brains active. For the same reason, I also spend some time working with sudoku on a daily basis.

  10. Hi Alan, another great video. Wonderful views and information. Be good to know what area of Funchal you live in and if you were starting afresh, with the things you know now, would you still choose that area?
Thanks again for all the info.

  11. I have been planning my move for 18 months. I agree, sometimes it all feel so daunting and stressful but I know it will be worth it. I have moments where I think "what are you doing?" But then, I have the easy answers that keep me going. I am sure you had your fears as well. I don't have to get rid of too much but it still seems like a project. I have sacrificed a lot to get to this point but I wouldn't have it any other way. I look forward to making new friends and having new adventures. By the way, I am also 66 years old.

  12. Bom Dia, Alan and Leslie! Was great to meet you for a drink last week when I was in Madeira. Loved this video. Thank you for talking about the steps you took before retirement/moving. Very informative. The central part of the island is beautiful. I'll have to visit that area next time I'm there. Cheers!

  13. Hi Alan,
Check out The Cherry Festival (Festa Da Cereja) in Jardim Da Serra (The Mountains garden) in Estreito de Camara De Lobos, not too far from where you live. Festival dates June 10 to June 12…
It is a Free event… try Madeiran Cherries (Cerejas da Madeira)
    Just a suggestion.
    Take care
    Carl

  14. Lovely video Alan. I also continue to kick myself over having waited 42 precious years of my life before finally deciding to come back to my very special Portugal. It is not easy, but it is worth it. Best decision ever, and to compensate, now that Covid is a bit more under control, it's time to truly enjoy our last years in such beauty, peace and tranquility. Cheers, fm Santarém, mainland🍻🍷🦞🍤🌰🥂♥️🇵🇹

  15. Bom Dia, Alan.
    Como Está? Tudo bem?
    Uau! (Wow!)
Alan, this video touched me so much😢. When I saw you driving your Beetle (Carocha), I went on a trip to my past when I was a child. My dad had a tender green Carocha (50's?). It could open the roof and the turn signals were like an arm light by the doors… Later my dad changed them to lights mounted on the fenders… He used to take us to Curral Das Freiras on the weekends and those roasted chestnuts tasted so good… They used to sell them in a tiny paper bag. Oh! Great memories.😭😭
Your video is very informative. It gives a clear picture of what it is like moving to another country and the adjustments and adaptation you have to make to change your lifestyle.
What I can say, keep an open mind. It is not always rosy but there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Be prepared for changes.
It is a new life journey!!
Thanks again for providing valuable information and experiences… You rock, Alan!❤
    Um Bom Fim De Semana.
    Obrigado pelos videos.
    Um grande abraço muito forte.
    Força! Saúde!
    Tchau!
    CARL (Toronto, Canada)❤❤
