There is a trick for an English speaker to learn Portuguese, the archaic or literary version of a word in English is often similar to the Portuguese word. Examples:
late / tarde / tardy
talk / conversar / converse
first/ primeiro / primo, primordial, primogenitor
dog / cão / canine, canid
day / dia / (related to the word) diary
sky / céu / (related to the word) celestial
blue / azul / azure
red / vermelho / vermillion
four / quatro / quaternary (fourth in order or rank)
bed / cama / camaraderie (comes from French camarade, which is also the source of English's comrade, meaning "friend or associate." Camarade means "roommate," "companion," or "a group sleeping in one room")
jump / saltar / saltatorial (especially of grasshoppers or their limbs, adapted for leaping)
big / grande / grand
etc
