Hello friends! Every day, with us, learn a little more knowledge. at the beginning of the 16th century, there great demand in Europe for spices such as nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, pepper and cloves. Due to the huge profits they brought, the maritime powers then traveled the world in search of them.
Portugal was one of the pioneer nations and they arrived in Indonesia in 1511. They occupied the Maluku Islands, Indonesia’s main source of spices. At the same time, occupy Melaka of Malaysia, to serve as a seaport for transshipment of goods through the Strait of Malacca.
In 1602, the East India Netherlands Company (abbreviated as VOC) was founded. They were commissioned by the government to dominate commerce. Due to the development of shipbuilding technology, their ships were faster, cheaper and more powerful, giving them an economic and military advantage over Portugal. VOC quickly replaced the Portuguese in the important archipelagos of Indonesia.
By 1641, they had extended their control to the north of Maluku Island, the southern part of Borneo Island, and West Java and Melaka of Malaysia. The Netherlands became the dominant power in the maritime industry.
From 1700-1757, there were three uprisings in Java, because the Dutch established strongholds and occupied the land of the people. Because of the small scale, poor leadership, and rudimentary weapons, the uprisings were eventually quelled. However, the wars had a significant impact on the VOC’s business.
