After spending four months in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico in 2020, I’ll tell you why we chose Portugal over Mexico.

It sounds like that viewer has not spent time in Portugal. Not everyone wants the tropical vibe with humidity, bugs etc. I lived in Mexico last year and really and really discovered I'm a Mediterranean or regions close to that kinda girl. The health care in Portugal is wonderful and Mexico keeps raising its residency requirements. The monthly income is often much more than the average single retired female is receiving from the states.
Fair comment thanks for sharing.
San Miguel de Allende is above and beyond beautiful. It’s a very expensive place concerning property prices. A lot of restaurants and the food is magnificent. Top Notch. Tourists in Playa del Carmen have brought with them the drug consumption issue and all that it entails. A totally different animal
Yes unfortunately PDC has changed and not in a positive way in my opinion. I got married there 20 years ago and it was charming and pretty safe. I went back to the area this May and wow it's extremely party focused and there was a shooting on 5th the week we were in the area. Not great. Portugal does feel safer to me except for the dogs who are behind fences who sound like they want to rip me to shreds. 😜
Most of the reason many Portuguese people immigrate to other countries is because Portugal is becoming a country for the foreign people to live in.
To say Mexico has no racism is a lie. All you have to do it look at the history there. After several visits to Mexico, I wouldn't want to retire there.
Great video, Kirsten. Love your honest comparison of Mexico and Portugal. I completely get the safety aspect making the decision for you!
Sadly the cats out of the bag about Portugal.. its now being overrun and becoming very overpriced at least with home pricing.
Hi Kirsten
In Mexico too many gringos.
Smart move !
I'm glad you debunked all the points the other person made. The only point the other person had correct was that Mexico is closer to the U.S and that can be viewed as a positive or a negative, depending on your perspective.
I was born and raised in the US. My parents are from Portugal and I've been there several times so I'm really bias. I'm really glad you're enjoying my family's homeland (tho we're from central, not Lisbon). Lisbon's a 3 hour drive. Much too far for a vacay. But Portugal's great no matter where you go! There so much to see.
Mexico has never been an option for us, as an alternative or close contender to move from California, I totally agree with the comment and experience about the food and quality of ingredients, we had been able to see it on South America. Safety is at the highest priority for selecting a place.
Good reply. 👍
Honest Kirsten
Well said and agree 💯 on everything!
No on Mexico but for different reasons. I want to be in Europe and will be moving to Portugal soon.
Thanks Kirsten for the additional information on your experience in Mexico as we are considering Mexico as a possible option. Love your channel!
Thank You. Looking forward to enjoying and scouting Lisbon later this month. We are a veteran family also, would be great to do a meet-up while there. Agape. Sam and Kayla Alix
Appreciate your candid assessment. I’m on my way to Portugal at the beginning of the year. See you there!
Thank you
Good on you for making this video.
I have seen the same question asked on another African American, living in Portugal, YouTuber channel.
The person who asked the question was an American,Expat living in Portugal🤔
Excellent commentary. I appreciate and admire your diplomacy. 😁 Sounds like you and Mark are the ultimate experts in comparing Mexico and PT having lived in both! Ultimately, I believe comparisons are always difficult and personal. Sure, the best thing one can do is live somewhere and see for yourself. Since everyone can’t do that, the best advice is ‘do your homework’ beforehand AND if you don’t like it—you can always move. Cheers. 👍🏻
Hi, Kirsten, I emailed you on gmail for a more private conversation; can you check it ?
Best regards
Hi Kirsten, you are so right about the "Food". We live in CA, mostly lived in Bayarea and now in S.CA. When we briefly lived in Denver, we learned that food from CA is much better than most of places that we have been traveled and lived. Safety is very important for us as well! Thank you for the video, 😀
