Portugal’s coast really wowed us. Mik and I rented a camper van and took it from Porto to Lisbon and back to Porto in 5 days. (I did the mistake of flying to and from Porto instead of to Porto and from Lisbon and leaving the camper van there. Would have saved me the time of driving it all the way back up)
The sunsets and sunrises are really something and places such as Nazare are out of this world and probably one of my favourite spots in the world that I’ve visited so far. It’s really mesmerising.
We both travelled with a camper van for the first time and it definitely won’t be our last. The convenience of doing what we wanted, when we wanted made us look at travel in such a different way. No rushing to check in, or wasting time to leave your luggage at a new location to then go back out. Your room is constantly moving with you and you’re constantly close to anything you might need. Feel tired and don’t want to continue driving? Find a spot nearby and sleep there. Feeling hungry? Stop on the side in the countryside and cook up something in your kitchen. Not to mention Ice cold beers in awesome sunset spots with your camper. Nothing like it.
Here is our itinerary for the 5 days and places you must go if visiting Portugal :
– Nazare : Best one out of all the places we went to. Arrived here for sunset and watched sunrise too. People cheering on surfers who dare to surf the largest surfable waves in the world. A must.
– Peniche : Surf town and some nice spots.
– Cabo Da Roca : Most western point in Europe with super cliff views.
– Praia Do Guincho : Super close to Cabo Da Roca and an awesome spot to sleep with the campervan right by the sea and watch sunset
– Cascais
– Sintra
– Lisbon : One of my favourite cities. Parked camper by the lake, walked around and then got a cab into the city. Buy some sangria and go to this awesome view point for sunset, loads of good vibes from students/youngsters there :
– Duoro Valley : Another must. Beautiful towns along the river with loads of wineries. You have to drive from Pinhao to Peso Da Regua as it was voted the nicest road to drive in the world in 2015 by Avis. Can confirm that it was definitely a beautiful drive with picturesque landscapes.
– Porto : Didn’t have much time to explore it, but you can check out the walking under the bridge tour.
If you have more time, you definitely need to visit Lagos and Faro which are beautiful beaches with awesome caves, south of Lisbon.
If you’re renting/using a camper van, download the app Park4night. It’s this brilliant app which works all over the world and shows you all the spots you can use with a camper, with what facilities there are, as well as where it’s legal to chuck your camper van. There are also reviews/photos from other travellers to make sure you understand everything. It was a life saver 🙌.
