Whats it like to stay in The Algarve in the winter, is it safe and is it warm. Join us as we share our knowledge we have learned over three years of travel to The Algarve Portugal.
Being off season it’s quiet in The Algarve, the crowds don’t start coming until summer months. There are more retired people staying here over the winter months from Northern Europe the U.K, Ireland and North America. With it being winter half the restaurants close but there are still many open where you can enjoy the tasty Portuguese food.
Portugal is one of the safest countries in Europe but you should still be aware of the possibilities of petty crime, we luckily have never experienced it. Portugal is also more affordable for food and they do produce a wide range of great quality food, making it a smart economical choice for a long stay winter break.

Maximum withdraw on the ATM is 2 withdraws of 200 euros for a total of 400 euros.
I have done it many times.
Keep on enjoying Portugal.
My pre-retirment Portugal staying intention is during Novemeber and February. Both low season and low cost and also, those are two months that I rarely work, as my work is seasonal. I just need to wait until my daughter is old enough to leave in the UK for that!
Please can you organize a get together for all of us who will be down on that coast next winter?! That would be a lovely thing to do! ❤️
Hello! Our friends highly recommended staying in Alvor. They stayed there for 10 winters and explored everywhere in their motorhome but always came back to Alvor. We are planning to do the same for winter 2023, (we are British but have retired to Bulgaria)
Wonderful video! Definitely looking into TAP. 😊
I’m intrigued that you travel with carry on bags only. Would you be willing to share your pack list?
My vision for my retirement, in Aug 2020, was to travel 4 times a year for 4 weeks at a time to really get to know a bit better the place I was traveling to. My husband and I had always traveled, but it was a week at a time and sometimes 2 weeks. Since my husband passed away before I retired I wanted to delve into a bit more of visiting a place for a month instead of a week. Unfortunately, I fell off a ladder, 3 weeks after retiring while picking apples for the deer in my yard(they’re on their own for apples now!) and I’ve spent the last almost two years dealing with surgeries, recoveries and finally a knee replacement this past January. I love your channel and will watch how you do Portugal. I would love to visit there, it looks divine!
Hello Norm and Tina. Good to hear from you again. I hope you don’t mind me asking some questions. If you think my question is too personal, you may not answer it and my apologies if that happens. If I understood it right, you sold your house and transferred to an apartment in Ontario. My question is, did you buy that apartment? If so, how much? And are you paying property tax? If you didn’t buy it and just rented it, how much? Includes utilities?
Also, I know you enjoy your retirement and my husband I are really happy following your vlogs. The thing is, compare from the property tax you were paying in your house before to the rent that you’re paying in your apartment ( considering you rented it), which is more expensive?
Sorry for lots of questions but my husband and I will appreciate anything you can share. Thank you.
Hi Tina and Norm. You are now my first ever YouTube subscription. 😁Just a note, we flew Air Transat non-stop to Faro this winter from Toronto (and the planes were half empty,). The website shows they are flying the same, once a week, in winter 2023. In case some of your viewers want to try that option. Love your videos!
Hey guys. Another great video! Thank you. Quick question for you. What website do you use to find your month to month rentals? So you use VRBO or another website? Thank you.
Great that you are returning to travel. After two years of stagnation, we did a month in Puerto Morelos last November/December and have just returned days ago from a month in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and France.
It is a wonderful feeling so we wish you a great time in Portugal. We plan to be there this September.
Great video. Wintering in Portugal sounds wonderful. Do you speak the language? Is this primarily a Canadian thing to do, or do Americans also winter in Portugal? You make it sound wonderful.
I had the sound off and the subtitles called that Norm’s “Burial Hat.”
You should try visiting Lisbon and surrounding area … very beautiful ..
I love Tavira, and hope to get back there for the winter (fingers crossed). I have only done 2 days in Albufeira once, and did not like it much (too British touristy, and the restaurants were not as impressive as those in Tavira). Out of curiousity, do you recommend any nice restaurants in Albufeira? Maybe I am giving it short-shrift, and should try again…but only if there are nice restaurants. I am not interested in "chips with everything" or fast food restaurants. So…do you have any recommendations for me?
This is great specific information very nice Thank you so much and enjoy your time wherever you might be at the moment.
Thanks for another great video. So pleased to hear you are going back to Portugal. We have our Panama cruise in Nov and looking forward to husband becoming Cdn citizen next Feb (depending on ceremony dates) then we are off again. Hope you are enjoying your trailer this weekend. Beautiful and warm x
Great video thank you
So happy for you to get back to your little bit of heaven! Completely agree with going directly to the hotel to book. There have been some really huge scams on fraudulent third party providers here in the UK – especially trips to Spain and Portugal rentals. Also – rental cars have gone through the roof in the UK and EU. Hopefully things improve soon!!
Very practical travel tips! Thanks for sharing.
Love Portugal! From the food, the people, the language and the landscape, definitely a lovely place to visit long term
Really useful for those travelling. You guys are always spot on. Glad that you are going back to the Algarve. 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
You didn't mention what to do for medical care and/or insurance while there. What are the requirements for us seniors and where do you take care of that (here in 🇨🇦 or there)? Thanks for the travel tips by the way, and good information in general.
I found that Interact fees are expensive. I've used prepaid Visa cards from CIBC attached to my bank account very cost effective.
Excellent, Tina and Norm. We have always done Mexico, Jan. to March, but we may just try Portugal this next year. Very reassuring video and info. Thank you very much ! Stay healthy😀🍉🍓and stay safe.🤠
Always great content. 👌🏾❤ Thx Norm & Tina!
I was sincerely impressed by your GREAT advice about accessing local currency. 1) Bring destination cash for about 1-2 days. 2) At destination, withdrawal local cash from ATM, using your domestic card. In fact, credit card conversion rates are often more competitive than debit card rates. Some credit card programs even offer "no fees for currency conversion". 3) Decline all invitations to "pre-convert" your transaction to CAD. As a former banker, that was always my advice to travellers.
