100K Major Service on my Overland Built Honda Passport

Hello All, this isn’t my typical adventure episode. Much of this video was edited while I was on a 3 day / 2 night snow camping trip in Mammoth, California. I did not have the time to sit down in front of my computer to edit a full featured episode. My goal is to release at least 1 video a week, so occasionally, I’ll have to do an edit on the iphone. The day prior to this trip, I visit Manny (@k20nartpro)@k20z3allmotorFTW at his business New Age Performance in Ventura, CA to get my 2019 Honda Passport’s 100K major service performed. This involves changing out the timing belt, water pump, and adjusting the valves.

Patreon has an excellent platform that allows me to share detailed BLOG write ups of the places I go. It even let’s me upload my GPX files for you to download. For as little as $1 a month, you can access my overland database. If you don’t care about all that and just want to show some love and give support, you can do that too 😛

  1. Another great, informative video Jon! Thank you for this. I'm still on the fence about oil weight. I'm old-school and grew up when everything was 10W-40. I've always thought the 5W-30 was better for the longevity of these Honda engines… but am nervous about the warranty period. Once I get over the 36K, I believe I will switch to the 5W-30. What are YOUR thoughts on it? Have you been running the 0W-20 stuff this whole time? Or did you change to something different? Thanks again!

  2. She's a dirty girl! Be nice to your mechanic and spray her down first. That's like showing up for your prostate exam after having Taco Bell! 🤣🤣🤣

I love the content. Everyone does gear reviews, and they are entertaining, but there's great value in reviewing the components Honda engineered. Not every Passport owner will have your mods, but they will all have that engine.

  3. Thank you for this! The direct injection was about the only thing giving me pause on the Passport, but seeing how clean your intake valves are definitely put me at ease! Checking out a Passport later this week…it looks like the perfect vehicle for our small (1 kiddo) adventurous family! 😁 …and Manny is awesome!

  4. Hang on to your old timing belt.. they come in handy for lots of things. They obviously can flex, but do not stretch easily, so they are excellent for improvised belt wrenches, or can be cut into strips for making hinges on underbody panels. I just used a big section of one of my old belts as a way to get my busted water heater out of the utility closet… wrapped it around the back of the tank and then used it to bear hug the beast and walk it out (empty of course..) 😉

  5. If you have only done regular maintenance, and have had no significant repairs, then this 100K tune-up makes the Passport look the most reliable vehicle of the year. I had doubts about its reliability due to issues with infotainment, Honda sensing, electrical, speakers crackling, etc., but clearly the powertrain is solid.

  6. Dear Honda: please bring that AWD to more models, including these available in Japan.

In Norther America Honda is considered a serious car manufacturer, in Japan a small car manufacturer.

This makes me sad, as I like Honda in general but own a Forester because of the details of CR-V in Japan

  7. Catch cans are an old drag racing item. Many just want to look cool with the bling.

This is my humble opinion, but Costco gas is good for everyday stuff. When I tow my travel trailer, I treat my tow vehicle to Chevron, Shell or 76 gas as this old butt can really feel the difference in performance. I periodically use Lucas Oil fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank also. In all my years of driving fuel injected cars, I have never had to have injectors pulled to be cleaned.

  8. Before I do any engine work, I usually blow the hell out of the engine bay with a power blower to get rid of most of the loose dust then cover all the electrical connectors, battery terminal, fuse box, etc, spray engine cleaner everywhere let it soak for an hour than just hose off the entire engine before doing any engine work. It’s a lot easier and cleaner to work on a relatively clean engine and easier to find defects (cracked hoses, rusted bolts, etc)

  9. I learned that running 5-30 was much better for my 08 Honda 2.4l, as opposed to the recommended 5-20. I used to run 0-20 for winter but now run 5-30 all year and the car loves it.
Helps to know that Honda uses different oil for the same exact engines in Japan than they do in the US.
My 08 2.4l is specd for 5-30 in Japan but 5-20 in US.
CAFE requirements have manufactures recommending thinner oil than the engine actually requires for longevity. The manufacture wants to safe money and make money. Not make a vehicle that lasts forever.
    Unfortunately…

  10. Why does you odometer say 109 but has actual driven of 118?
Also, do you have the transmission cooler? Have you had any of the common issues that arise with the transmission cooler installed? Usually it’s accompanied by a loud sound and vibration in the fifth six gear change.

  11. Jon… Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!! I've been waiting for this review of your long term maintenance / durability of the Honda! I assume Manny did the spark plugs? So happy to see the timing belt held up very well and the entire vehicle really! I say she'll be going strong at 500K!! LOL. I'm a bit of a shade tree mechanic and do a lot of my own work. Your Intake valves had very little carbon build up for 119,000miles! What kind of intake spray cleaner do you run? You said you have the can in the back seat? That is really reassuring! Keep changing that oil and keeping the Passport happy. I want to do my transmission fluid at 25K Thanks again for posting it. I'm sure the engine is running much smoother and quieter now after the plyer extraction and the new pulleys! Awesome man!!!!

  12. Thank you for this Jon. BTW, I just purchased a new Passport Trailsport a few weeks ago. Liking it a lot. Looks like a very simple engine to do maintenance on. I am stock lift and installed all the NoLo skid plates (front, mid/cat, carrier bearing, gas tank and diff). I don't plan on getting as crazy as you off road. I appreciate your videos. They have been helpful in regards to showing the capability of this rig with a great driver such as yourself behind the wheel.

  13. When will mechanics learn that they are not engineers. 0w20 has been around forever… Japan has 0w12 and 0w8 oil. 10k intervals are beyond conservative. Do what HONDA tells you to do. There is zero historical evidence of Honda screwing customers for profits.

  14. I don't think detergent in fuel is supposed to prevent sludge, that's the quality of the oil that prevents that and how often you change it. The detergent in fuel is supposed to clean valves and injectors on multiport engines and injectors in direct-port since the valves can't be cleaned by fuel in those type of engines. Costco gas is as cheap as most 3rd party chain stations but quality fuel like other Top Tier stations. Best bang for your buck gasoline in Socal.
