We are hiking the Island of Madeira in Portugal. This week we are on ‘The Big Walk’ with ‘Hit The Road Madeira’. Having wonderful time. 😎We are also answering your questions about us. Let’s go. It’ll Be fun!

The first 3 days of the walk we start with a sunrise and walking along the Northeast coast from Machico to Porto da Cruz. Then off to Portela and onto Ribeiro Frio. And we end this weeks video on Levada do Caldeirao Verde and the grand waterfall. In case you do not know, the Madeira Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean about 325 miles west of Morocco and 625 SW of Lisbon.

  1. Just found your channel, love it! So helpful , as I am planning on doing the same , making the move to Portugal. I’m coming as a single woman, do you find it safe on the island ?

  2. Thank you Alan for the fabulous content you put out. I was born in Madeira, my family moved across to Australia when I was 3. After 52 years in Australia myself and my husband are talking about moving to Madeira. Watching your video has inspired me that sooner rather than later is the way to go. Thanks again

  3. Bom Dia Alan.
    Oi! Tudo Bem?
    Beautiful. Simply Beautiful.
You got a South African guide. Funny you mentioned it. During the Apartheid in SA, there was a joke in Madeira (at that time there were over 600.000 Madeirans in SA including my Maternal Uncle and his family). Madeira had about 330.000 inhabitants (Can't understand why the actual numbers are lower by almost 100.000 with so much housing and development in the last 50 years). The stats beat me!!… Going back to the joke….
The joke was that if all the Madeirans in SA returned, Madeira would sink (Madeira is known as a Floating Garden In the Atlantic. It would be overcrowded. It would be nearly 1 Million people!!…). Many returned. Like in the last few years. Madeirans in Venezuela have returned.

In the 80's there was a housing bloom in Madeira due to the instability In Venezuela and it continued. In my former neighbourhood in Madeira, there were many Madeiran descents who built homes nearby. Reason why it was a stone away from The Centro (Downtown Funchal) and the small farm lots available and the view over Funchal. Some loved the fact they had a piece of land to do some farming (their roots from the rural areas) and others returned to the Rural areas and built and built.

Today, Madeira is what it is now due to a stable government and a man in front of it who wanted to develop Madeira to a higher level and I think he did it.
The beautiful and safe Madeira International Airport (it is a safe airport due to only certified pilots can land there. You know you are in good hands) was expanded to accommodate the high demands for air tourism travelers.

Great choice you made, meu amigo Alan, to retire in Madeira. North America today is not safe anymore. Little kids are getting killed in schools. Too many guns in the streets now. Gun violence has increased, politicians just want the votes and the perks, etc etc. I always said and continue to say "with migration (not going to specify) also brings in the crimes). That is a reality. Mental Health is a great issue. Mental Health is an invisible illness.
My friend, you are blessed to make your choice. Madeira: Peace. Air. Quiet. Body, Mind. Safety.
Thank You for a great quality job. You rock, Alan.
Enjoy your life journey in Madeira.
Disfruta a vossa jornada da vida na Madeira.
    Um forte abraço, meu amigo
    (A big hug, my friend).
    Cheers. Saúde.
    Tchau
    CARL (Toronto, Madeira)🙂
