About us: We are from the USA and have moved to the beautiful Island of Madeira in Portugal. We are very grateful to have this opportunity. We have put together this channel to talk about our journey. We hope to help you with yours.
Have you ever thought about giving up on the American Dream? Well we finally decided to do just that. We chose to downsize our life into one we could afford in retirement. And that has taken us across the world.
Are you thinking about moving abroad, becoming expats or immigrating? Or maybe you are moving to Portugal or Madeira Portugal. Each week we talk about our journey to retirement, in moving to Portugal, moving to the Island of Madeira and our new experiences. We also answer questions from our viewers!

In case you do not know, the Madeira Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean about 325 miles west of Morocco and 625 SW of Lisbon.

  1. From my perspective, the most problematic part of being an immigrant to a new culture is having to contend with two different points of reference, one initially strong but receding, the other weak but growing. These are often in conflict with each other.

I will try to illustrate it with an example. In the middle of our Norwegian municipal "capital" is a village heat distribution centre, that pipes hot water to many buildings in the village. It burns locally produced wood to provide the energy. I don't care for burning wood. In part, this is because I grew up a sawdust burner as our family's main source of household heat, before it was replaced with "clean-burning" oil furnace in the late 1950s. In British Columbia, as well as Washington state, and elsewhere, efforts are being made to eliminate woodburning stoves, because of the health hazards associated with them, particularly deep inside the lungs of vulnerable people, such as children and the elderly. The P2.5 figures show that this is an undesirable activity. In Norway, there do not seem to be P2.5 values collected for woodstoves. From my perspective, it seems that the authorities don't want to face the health risk of burning wood. Instead P10 values are collected and published, which are essentially meaningless with respect to chronic health issues affecting the lungs.

Where I would like to close down the heat distribution centre, or at least move it out of the village mid-point, the majority of the village regard this as a beneficial project. This is just one example of how deep-seated ideas can come into conflict with each other. Over the past forty + years I have lived in Norway, the Norwegian perspective increasingly represents my opinion, and more often I chose it, rather than the North American view.

The first time I noticed my values changing was about a year after we moved to Norway. We had visitors from California stay with us for a week. It was easy to see that our views were no longer so fully in agreement. Moving to another country creates new perspectives, opening new windows onto the world.

  2. I have been in Madeira Portugal, beautiful island, I'm from S. Miguel Açores, live in the USA for 34 years now.
You never know what the weather is going to be like, but I do love Madeira.
    Happy Thanksgiving

  3. Gosh I really like you guys and enjoy your pleasant informative fun hearted videos. Very encouraging indeed! I'm tossing around many ideas for the thought of coming to Portugal such as, importing my 2010 Nissan Cube. As much as I may not want the care involved in vehicle maintenance, I believe it will be a necessary evil that I cannot give up because when I want to just go somewhere, that I will still have the freedom to do so. I wonder the number of expats that actually return to their roots after such a huge move or are most expats set for life once they choose a new life abroad?…Oh well in the meantime I will keep the dream alive as I eagerly await my turn to make a move! Sounds fab!

  4. I would like you ask about the number of gray overcast days. I struggle with depression and we're looking to retire somewhere where there's more sun and warmer weather than Montana. Also, any thoughts or experiences with the mental health community, counseling, general attitudes towards mental health issues? Thanks to you 3 for brightening up our winter days with so much greenery and sunshine. 🙂
