I absolutely love living in Portugal but it is certainly not for everyone.
In this video I talk about some of those reasons.
This is NOT a video against Portugal but a realistic view into what the negatives may be in my opinion.

From a portuguese person: very wise video 🙂
I don't know where you are living, but either in Lisbon or in small towns that I visit no one smokes in restaurants – or indoors, for that matter. For the rest you are correct. You'll have to get an expensively built house to have acoustic comfort.
Please stop saying Portugal like that, you can only get away with that if youre actually speaking Portuguese
VAT can be 23%, 13% or 6% depending on goods.
Smoking.. not really!
It's amazing someone is in Portugal and just knows nothing and doing no sense videos 🤣 if you are in Portugal just leave and we will not miss you at all. Get a live 🤗
Bro, I live in Lisbon in A 20 year old apartment and this place has reinforced concrete walls. I don’t hear anything🤷🏾♂️
1st reason, I don't like you.
Congrats for your quitting smoking!
You should pay taxes so Americans could have safe and free health care.
In Portugal there's very restricted rules about houses construction, must be earthquake proof, and so. Another thing that surprises me is the fact that in USA the houses are built mostly of wood… Maybe you have been on cheap B&B, where people divides big houses to rent more apartments (flats) and make more profit.
Just one more thing, witch restaurants or bars have you been where people is allowed to smoke inside 🤔? Names please. Even in other public places its not allowed to smoke, but if you look around maybe you can see a space always outside dedicated to smoker. That are less and less in Portugal.
I agree with the high taxes, specially compared with USA, but we also have compensations, like health (use to be better, but nobody dies in front of the hospital because has no money or insurance), education and security in the streets. You still have many stereotypes and obviously think like one american.
The way you pronounce "Portugal" in English is weird.
As a portuguese living in Germany:
– I came to realize that taxes in Portugal, even though a bit high compared to other countries, allow us to have a decent public health system, for example, that countries with lower taxes don't have. We pay a lot, but we also get a lot.
(and I know this is a controversial topic specifically regarding the public health system in Portugal, but we all know how it is (isn't) in the US, and apparently in Germany… I would never guess that I would miss so much being able to get decent help from public (and private) health services.
About the smoking, even though I understand your point, I belive that Portugal has made a lot of good changes in the past years and in most places you can choose were to sit and there are usually designated places for smokers.
And about the thin walls, as soon as I heard you I understood what you mean! However, and as you said, it happens wherever you go (I believe, while traveling, as in, hotels and airbnb's) and you also referred to Lisbon or other big cities.
I believe this does not reflect the quality of the houses in Portugal. It reflects more the "thirst" of some cities and companies to attract tourism and cram as many "beds" as possible in small old buildings.
Places like Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra are getting gentrified and attempting to get tourists and young Portuguese people that cannot afford "normal" houses. And that's when you get the thin walls.
But I believe if you travel to the interior or the rural north, you will see old thick walls from the generations of our parents when a 25/30 year old would have enough money to build their own place 🙂
In summary: Portugal ie heaven if you are retired and have time ; bureaucracy: Casa de Papel 😀😂🤣
All the points are very true. Spain also has very thin walls and cheap construction.
How come you haven't talked about some instruments? like the Cavaquinho or portugues guitar they are quite interesting, this is the 5º i'm comenting this i'm incrinsigthly more disapointed 🥲.
Only agree with numbers 2 to 4.
Number 1 – Can't remember the last time I went to a coffee shop or restaurant where it was allowed to smoke unless you are outdoors.
Number 5 – In Portugal all walls are made of bricks, in older homes walls are made of thick stone. Bricks have standard sizes so I really don't know what you mean by thin walls. Usually in apartments the sounds you mostly hear come from the upstairs neighbour and not from the neighbour in the next door.
The tax rates are high indeed , but they also pay for our free healthcare , free education , pensions for the retired people and other benefits like paid sick leaves , family allowance paid by the state for the kids till 18 , etc .
Excelente vídeo however let me add that we in Portugal receive 14 salaries and for every 8h you get a lunch voucher in my case just ouver seven euros regarding ower taxes they maybe higher than the US but we do have free helfcare my self personally have had two surgerys and regula check ups zero cost … Saying all this I wish you well.. (boas festas e abraço)
Man, all non-sens!!! 🥵😱
Correction: The NHR is a flat 10% on pension income, it can be more for other types of income.
the product of one's work is effectively taxed way more than what you've shown. In order for an employer to pay an employee they too must pay around 20% tax so add that to mix. Someone making minimum wage will see half of their salary go to the state, then have to pay another 23% tax on most things. If you already have loads of money portugal must be heaven but if you are trying to grow and make a living here don't even bother
i am gonna ask you one thing to consider please, stop using the term expat, when you move from one country to live on another you are an immigrant and theres nothing wrong about that word, however i constantly see people from english speaking countries calling themselfs expats and others immigrants, its making this seem like they are a superior class and we dont appreciate that, to us anyone from outside is a estrangeiro, but if you were to fill out paper work on your status you are either a resident, a tourist, a refugee or an immigrante, there is no such things as expats in the portuguese language, culture or burocracy.
So id truly appreciate people stopped using that term because it truly seems they only use it to appear superior to immigrants, it reekes of classism and colonialism
3:40 minimum wage is 705€ because there is 14 months and not 12 months. In summer and christmas we receive an extra wage
hahahahahahahahahaha awesome lol
Sorry, but I just can't hear say 'Pohrtugal' one more time. It's something like 'Purtugal'. If you can't say it, just say it in English then.
Number 4 is very accurate. Especially when you don't speak Portuguese. Be patient. I need to go to an office in the Algarve, 3h drive from Lisbon, just to change my address in the finance system because the clerck was upset from the client before me. 😂 Imagine: The clerck just couldn't make an appointment area Lisbon in 2023! Not a single day! Aaaaaah… Portugal. 😁
Não entendi a parte do tabaco!!!!! é proibido fumar no interior de espaços públicos 🤷
I work at a Pestana Pousada and makes me angry almost 95% of Americans complain about the room sizes, when it's normal here, unless they wanna pay for a Suit, yes that is bigger, I wished they understood that here houses/bedrooms aren't gigantic like in America
Change to another café because it seems it is allowed to smoke inside the café you usualy go.
Also about the "thin walls" you either move to an old appartment őr a new one and you only know you will notice if the walls are thin or not in a couple of days. Not every building has thin walls
why you keep showing up on my recommend videos if i already not to show up your channel? this youtube is getting worse day by day
Thin walls initially were made in Hell
This guy is very irritable
An american saying the walls are very thin in portugal when half the houses there are made of drywall
I've been really enjoying your videos, but this one was pretty choppy; perhaps rushed to put together. I don't think you deserve a thumbs down, but I am hoping the quality returns for future videos. Content = good; presentation = not so much.
Might add one, if you get really bent out of shape when someone tailgates you, Portugal is going to drive you insane if you plan on driving….
wages are wrong. its 700
Tbh I'm not so sure about the thin walls.
Been living in Vila Nova de Gaia all my life, and thin walls are not really a problem… I suppose it's more about the poor isolation. Specially in older constructions.
I do hear some time to time my neighbours but not to the point where I feel like they're inside my apartment.
Maybe compared to the states is quite diff 😀
Dave, i can't wait to see you visiting Portugal cities like Santarem or Braga, they are beatiful and from the countryside. There's a lot of content from other chanels, but i believe the videos you make would propably be the best of YouTube 👍
48pct? Fck… 🙁
