#9 We got broilers! | Farmsitting in Central Portugal

Hi friends!

In this week’s vlog we celebrate all our birthdays, mine, Adam’s and our dog Odin’s. We finish building the chicken tractors and get the broilers! I am so excited for this, as small scale organic chicken is really missing in the area, and I am proud to grow it for my community!

Who are we?

We are Fenia, Adam and Odin and we are searching for land in Portugal to start our little farm.

We are planning to install greywater systems, raise happy animals, be self-sufficient in electricity and water, plant food forests, build eco-structures like cob houses and treehouses, and much more. Our biggest goal is to have our own bakery on the land and serve farm-to-table meals.

We have been exploring most of Portugal with our caravan during the summer and we decided to rent a place to stay warm and dry during the winter! Traveling alone with a toddler (and a young dog!) might seem pretty crazy, and it is indeed very challenging, but for me, it was the only way to make sure I find a place that suits our needs and head towards self-sufficiency!

I think that documenting our journey from looking for a place until reaching our self-sufficiency goals can be interesting and inspiring, especially to fellow mommies! Becoming mothers doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice our dreams and live a “regular life”. You can achieve anything you set your mind to, even if you have (young) kids!

  1. Hi Fenia;
    Another lovely look into your life, your reports are truly inspiring, on a self care note, please be careful not to burn-out, like an athlete who over trains and gets fatigue, a young mother and frontiers woman like yourself can also succumb.
    Remember to take some self care time, down tools and chill out now and again. Live the dream!

  2. Kalispera! Wow! Farming is hard work! Do you see snakes in your land?
    Adam is an adorable little boy, love his cute smile! It’s great that you are teaching him your language too! Does he speak Portuguese as well?
    Thanks for showing us life in Portugal. Look after yourselves.

  3. Amazing video! You are so talented, and you are an excellent mom. If I could go back, I would raise my children in a setting like yours! Do networking with other homesteader like Cindy Vine or Portugal Project, they can visit you or you visit them and have them to introduce your channel to their subscriber! The best of luck! Adam is adorable like an angel. 😍🤩

  4. Hi Fenia, you should put chicken wire at the bottom of your chicken tractors as the mongoose and other predators can just tunnel underneath the side and get into the chicks. Keep up the good work.
