Carissa, Iwan & Frankie decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month they were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call their new home. We picked up Albi the cat along the way. Subscribe to follow our journey as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

Love Frankie….gorgeous 😍also….the cement mixer….its cleaner than my kitchen…which is spotless btw…how is the OCD these days 🙃
What you need is: EXLECO Grouting gun for mortar, hand mortar pump with 4 nozzles, 1 spare rubber piston, rubber piston, mortar press, mortar sprayer, joint syringe with accessories. (Amazon)
I love following your work on the barn 😍 we hope to stay with friends in central Portugal and my partner loves to climb so I told him about your climbing wall!Do you know any good places to climb around the Ansiao area? Good wishes Julia
I'm not a proffesional at all but I'm a bit confused. I thought pointing is when you leave the original stonework exposed. It seems you guys have a lottttt of cement covering the stones. I think you l are doing a wonderful job and please dont think my remark is critique. I love the way your Frankie does rolly-polly and follows you around🤗🐾😍Bravo to investing in a cement-mixer!
Have you thought about switching it up and put the sofa against the shelf and then fully filling the shelf areas all the way across and then putting your decor items in the wall or even some cat shelves that they can have fun on. That would make a nice eclectic shelf area with wood from your farm. Then do the kitchen against the wall that is flatter. I think I saw some pretty wood shelves in the nooks at Nick's house on his videos. I do like my stove closer to the sink for water and washing up. Can't wait to see what you do!
I would put the sofa along the wall with the “shelf” and use the flat walls for the built in units, the stove and the work surfaces of the kitchen. The “shelf” could then be used for books and cat naps.
Please don't use cement to repoint an old building. Use natural hydraulic lime (NHL) mixed with sand in the ratio 1:3. It is also much nicer to work with. There are plenty of very good tutorials on YouTube.
A combustion stove can be used as a stove and room heater
Could you flip the plan and put kitchen on Wall where couch is and couch on Wall with shelf? That way you could have a standard depth kitchen and the shelf behind the couch would look good with art and other collectables.
What you need to do is lay a plastic sheet or wooden board down near your dwelling (where you intend to do most of the mixing) move all the sand there in one go use the buckets to fill the mixer with sand cement etc and use the wheel barrow to hold the cement mix, if you make the mix a little wet add more sand cement to make it right (don't wait for it to go off – at some point you'll do this and totally forget about it, then you will learn a lesson)
I’m wondering if you could put your sofa against the thick wall and your kitchen either side of the door and in an ‘L’shape against the adjoining wall. It doesn’t make the traditional triangle but you’d get a nice view from the sofa with the door to your left and the wall would make a nice book shelf. You could also make ‘box’ shelves to hang from the brieze blocks. If you put all the room measurements on your plan, including the walls either side of the door, you could work out how everything fits in! Then just imagine yourself moving around the kitchen to see if it would work!
Lime not cement for old buildings.
If your room could be dedicated only to the kitchen, that would be so much easier to work with. 😉. But unfortunately it has to be living and cooking. I’m sure you’ll find a way….but I’m just not seeing a solution either.
Frankie is THE supervisor!!!
Empty the mixer into the wheelbarrow, and don’t stand in front of it looking in as your bound to get splattered at some point 😉
Hi, sorry, I feel like this is maybe a silly comment. But we have lots of off-grid small-scale farming here in Africa, so we need cost-effective easy to use equipment. Just saw something you might like (if you don't know it already)? They called it a hand held weeding cultivator. It's a lot like a hand held trimmer, but it tills (and weeds) at the same time. I've never seen one before… Good luck with all your work and the new cement mixer!
Why not make a "breakfast" nook on the long wall opposite of the sofa? With a table you would be able to fold in? Or do you plan to always eat outside? (I mean, its Portugal of course…🙂) And indeed, put the fridge in the corner and the oven next to it, with maybe a small cabinet in between? Under the sink you'll still have some storage space aswell? How much storage do you think you need?
should try with a thin sand maube !!!goodluck there !!
Your place is looking so good, the garden with the flowers and your seed setting, it will soon be even better propping with the vegetables and such. And your area is so beautiful all around….and nothing better than becoming your home sweet home 🥰
build the bottom cabinets with finish high of 90cm and 58cm deep (standard measurements for normal house) can be build with plywwod and is plenty of ideas to maximize space in the web.
I think you could hang cabinets above the high shelf. That would be a good start.
Add a small amount of washing up liquid to your mix. 😉
Hi, we have a Hobby 700 motorhome home that is a 2003 model the FML, it has a really great design kitchen area.
There is a large cupboard with shelving large enough to hold plastic boxes like a pantry.
Next to it is the cooker hob with oven below cupboard draws, a circular sink, and a good work. top space for food preparation.
The fridge and freezer is on an opposite wall.
The area is a lot smaller than your area, but if you can check the design out . We have lived with it for many years ,it works well.
It may free up a wall allowing for a small table and 2 chairs for eating at or even a work station when needed.
Cement needs to be really wet and runny in pipping bag, they will work. Just not as you found, at that consistency try again they are good,.🙂🙂
Here something for your options put a wide shelf on top of ledge with strip lighting shining down on work top and a curved live edge counter top here’s something for idea https://youtu.be/GA2uZNoHSOk
Boa noite. ❤️🇵🇹
Remove the sofa from the equation and see if the space it occupies can serve as an area for the stove and oven or even put the sink there?
Play around in IKEA Kitchen Planner. It’s basically a very simple computerized planner for designing layout. I would go with a smaller inside kitchen and a bigger outside kitchen.
Use little stones to fill the big holes first. You'll save much cement.
What a pity to use cement to plaster the walls of a stone house😔 You guys should have gone for clay and would profit from a lovely climate in the house…
I use a sementmixer to mix kompost before putting it on the bed.
good
In my experience it is worthwhile persevering with icing bag, perhaps make hole a little bigger … to use to fill deep cavities because as you push the cement in with a trowel it perhaps seals the hole before it completely filled !
Unfortunately no quick and easy fix !
I laboriously used this method when renovating a 300year old granite cottage … three large rooms and some time later I was satisfied the cavities had been filled and no critters could live there in the future !
I don’t think the stone shelf will be out of reach the base units will be around 18 inches thus giving you plenty of stretch space ?
Good luck … 🙏☘️😘
Could you make the kitchen where you plan to make your bedroom?
I'm sure you've thought of this but you could infill all or some of the space above the shelf (not sure the depth) and attach wall cabinets or more shelving to the new wall, this gives you a more traditional wall to put your 60cm counter against without losing storage. Less practically you could either put cabinets or butchers block on wheels allowing you to shift them when you need access to the shelf behind. Also you can buy 50cm freestanding oven or even 45cm if you go for a marine oven. Anyway I'm sure you will find what works for you
I don’t think you should fill the holes. It helps to keep them to dissipate moisture in the wall as you don’t have a cavity.
I would suggest putting the woodburner next to the stove about half of the wall (it’s not going to heat the next room 😉) so you can put your sofa more in the back and look at your woodburner. This is much more cost and you could use it to for example heat some water for tea
Ha ha the cats tail in the video got love animals
Great video guys, it'll take a few mixes before you realise how much less water you need when you use plasticiser, 😂😂❤️❤️
Has anyone mentioned how great the music on this channel is?
Don't put a fridge near any burner. It won't work well.
What if u had a counter that had a drop down leaf so u could lift up for more countertop then when not in use drop down. Hum did that make any sense?
Frankie was too happy. She's just beaming. Good life
Wow that was a big hole you were filling. Too bad it wasn't where your stovepipe needs to go through. Life. Lol
Love all the color!! Oh how lovely for you. Cept for poor frankie, wonder what alby thinks. Im so glad
Why dont you just solid plaster the walls instead of putting on a bit of mortar in the cracks to time consuming the way you are doing it !
As your seedlings come up ,on sunny days open it up so as fungal diseases/ damping off don’t take over, close at night to protect from late frosts ,when planted I use water bottles full length bum removed and placed over till established a stick through the open cap stops blowing away just till all frost danger is passed keeps pests off too ,glass houses are painted white to block out hot summer sun when cabbage / brassicas seeds are done same for winter veg , kitchen , some have said move the couch to shelf leave sink as is and build standard depth cupboards , I prefer having lounge facing the fire if too hot fire screen , frees the shelf up for candles dried herb bunches lavender I used old ladder with steel sliders / industrial sheik for hanging my copper pots , all that takes up valuable space , but makes the home look dolly , try keeping stoves away from fridge a pot cupboard perhaps ? As the fridge I feel works harder if it is next to oven great vid lovelies 👍❤️❤️❤️🙏cap off on hot days🤣ps grab some copper wir and train them sure you know this 👍
Ok have had a quick look and use the wall without the shelf to put you full depth kitchen units, hang on going to see if I can upload a photo if what I mean. Please remember I am no artist! Lol Hwyl am y tro
Well, does the door go into the corner or do you have some wall space on the other side? The sofa could go under the shelf with the wood burner going in the opposite corner. It could become more of a cwts then. Can you cook on the wood burner? Also maybe put the wood burner you have into the bedroom and buying a bigger one to cook on in the kitchen. Oh I’m a bit tired as I worked nights so haven’t long been out of bed. Anyway the point I am trying to make is using the shelf for some storage yes but it could also be used for lamps! Going to look at your plan again to see if I’ve written complete rubbish here so far! Hwyl am y tro x
