An Interior Designer's Own Apartment With An Open Kitchen and Living Area (House Tour)

1904 Victorian by Jillian Dinkel is at once grand and serene. This interior designer’s own apartment offers the creative freedom to experiment with bold finishes and contemporary family spaces.

Located in Manly, the apartment has been entirely reconfigured, making the most of its north-east orientation and glimpses of the ocean. Bedrooms have been re-purposed into an open kitchen and living space, with plenty of natural light and plenty of room for daily life.

The project is an exhibit of texture and materiality. Features such as custom joinery in coloured walnut veneer, marble countertops and handmade Moroccan tiles, all proclaim this space as an interior designer’s own apartment. Dinkel has built upon the design brief to celebrate the building’s heritage features, like the detailed cornices and the grand hallway arch, with dramatic finishes such as wainscotting, decorative wallpaper and bespoke lighting. Dinkel brings a distinctly American perspective to the project, with marble tiles that reference Brooklyn and a cobblestone laundry-cum-mudroom.

The residence being the interior designer’s own apartment meant the space was primed for bold, experimental choices, such as a bedroom painted entirely black. Much like the rest of the apartment, this room is executed elegantly. Both practical and adventurous, personal and decorative, this project is undeniably an interior designer’s own apartment.

  1. The paint colours and the tiles are gorgeous, and I love what I can see of the rooms – but why are these house tours so focussed on the details, without giving an overview of the rooms: so frustrating for viewers!

  2. This is one of the most interesting instalments on this channel. It's such a break from the vapid contemporary trends you normally do. There's so much character, and the natural marble, wood, and tile are incredible. I'd love to see more of this.

  3. Cobblestone might exist in the states but it is not American. A lot of the aesthetic isn’t american. It might be what she ends up with but it is definitely not new. The UK has been doing this style for ages. Still beautiful though.

  4. The pendant lights were gorgeous, but the house was so dark with so few windows that it felt claustrophobic to me. She kept talking about the sun and I didn't see any room other than the laundry room that looked like it had much sun. Maybe it was just the way it was shot or the time of day of the shoot?

  5. this is an amazing apartment I just can't help but be curious if she called her dog an italian greyhound to sound fancy lol. it would be a massive italian greyhound I swear it's just a whippet hahaha

  6. Why so dark?? A black bedroom?? Why?? To feel cool???
You are not a teenager that is painting his room black to ptotest against the world.. so many colors you couls choose.. when you mentioned that you are an american it all came together for me…you do not buy culture in a supermarket..even in a big one..
I presume that it is your taste and I respect that since it obviously make you happy…
But please do not try to convince me with your interior designe decision
