Building a Circular Deck: Framing – Off Grid Living Part 2

After much planning, designing and ordering of timber, we’re ready to start building the sub-frame for our new off-grid living setup. It’s a 26-sided polygon to fit within a (mostly) circular structure on our property that used to be used for threshing of things. It was primarily used for drying corn and other crops harvested from the land back in the day but it’s the perfect location for our new temporary home while we renovate the old farm house.

The project got off to a good start but the weather was not on our side. Can we complete the build in our five day timeframe? Let’s find out!

  1. Dear Make of Grow, I watched your video how built your deck.
I would like to ask what of kind screw used for the wood together.
Thank you all your very interesting project what you both did it.👌

  2. Your New amount, (24 sided) is called a "icositetragon" or as they say, "A 24 sided polygon" And said, that the sum of any icositetragon's interior angles is 3960 degrees. Internal angle (degrees) is 165". . . . lol. . yeah, I looked it up. . GREAT work you guys!! 🙂

  3. Tung oil is excellent to use, usually in wood finishes, it allows the wood to breathe, harden, & preserves, prevents mold & deters termites. If you thin with turpentine will be easily applied & absorbed.

  4. How much water fills that area when it rains a lot? Could turn into a nice pond! Are you planning to raise the quadrants on tiles or some such so they aren’t sitting on wet ground?

  5. That was great to see, the building of the deck. Shame about the crapy weather, it would have taken the gloss off the doing. 24 vs 26, 24 sounds more comprehensible to me too. Being a bit out over a large structure, you've never built before, also sounds okay to me, also the mitigation of was a great compromise, even if it meant a little more doing. Thank you once again for the insight.

  6. Back im time guys what a work, we saw this video earlier but forgot what is under the tent and kitchen. We love your way to aproach everything we love your Chanel Couldn't i contact you about the solar system you build we want to do the same in Rabasinas.

  7. Kylie & Guy, I am so pleased that you are finally bringing back all the old videos (from the now defuncted channel) to show all the newbies to the channel what you both went thru in setting up, after buying the property. Plus it is also a great reminder to those of that have followed you both all the way thru. That no matter how hard it got, back then or even now… that you both never gave/give up.

  8. I watch so many couples do these off-grid projects but only your decade of previous house renovation projects ensure that everything you do is done properly first time every time. A joy to watch. Thanks

  9. QUESTION:::
WHY DIDNT YOU FIND THE CENTER AN THEM DRAW A CIRCLE WITH SPRAY PAINT SO THAT YOUR NOT FIGHTING YOUR SELF TO FIND THE BEST WAY TO GET THE JOB DONE…
NOT BEING MEAN JUST WONDERING IS ALL
    JUST A THOUGHT….

  10. This brings back the memories as some of this I still remember, which is great for me as I have short term memory loss. This means that my memory is not as bad as it was 26 years ago. It will be interesting to see what else I remember in this series as I thought that the damage to my brain was permanent and would not get any better. Thanks for showing the series and may you continue for a while yet after all this is just the first week!!

  11. If you place a speed square beside your saw as you align it, you will cut a perfect 90-degree and don't need to even look at the saw's guide notch. You may have to raise your saw blade a 1/4" to 1/2", so that your motor doesn't bump the edge of the speed square. Always cut with the largest part of the saw's plate on the part of the board that is on your sawhorses – not on the part that is going to fall off.

  12. I have always wished you went with one of your other options. The yurt.
I really wanted to see you build it and make it a comfy little home. More weather insulated for the 2 of you pluss when family comes to visit they would have a comfortable place to stay for free.

  13. Just reading all the comments from New and most recent subscribers.
This is awesome to see how this channel has grown.
I think this was a great idea of reviewing all of this hard work for the newbies to get a good look at how far you really have come.
I remember this build as it was going on and was so excited to see this through with you of this extraordinary journey of yours.
    Thanks!!
