This… seems like utter bullshit. I'm sure there is an upswing in expatriate movements currently, but this makes it seem like Californians are leaving en masse. I LIVE in LA. We're not. I don't know a SINGLE person who has moved, is planning to move, or even WANTS to move to friggin' Lisbon….

I have lived in both Spain and Portugal and was there for nearly 23 years. I went there moving from California in the late 1990s.
3 things to set straight…
1) Free medicine is a myth
2) Things are not cheap
3) Americans Gentrify every place that they invade in droves and aren't welcomed after they screw the places up…
Regretfully, I had to move back to the States a Couple of years back in order to give my kids career opportunities that just don't exist nor will probably never exist for them in the EU. The lesson to be learned is that there is absolutely no perfect place on this earth. If you want the closest thing to the U.S. without all the crime, pollution, culture shock etc??? Better than the EU perhaps you should look at trying to immigrate to Australia or Canada which both have the same language and both have opportunities for generations to come. If I had to do it all over again, I would move to Argentina or Australia.

I am a female owning a condo in a desired leafy neighborhood in Silicon Valley, California. No, I am not a tech worker. For years, my condo was underwater. Now, it’s not uncommon to see property selling $250k to $500k over listing price right in my backyard. I’m just bewildered of the stratosphere growth rate of return on my investment. I may sell or rent the condo and live a spa life full-time in Portugal or the Mediterranean. Hey, I do what I do to relax after laboring in the rat race of Silicon Valley and living in the least-affordable and affluent place on the planet.
So if you make a lot of money and have the luxury of working remotely, this is possible. Not everyone can do this. Also, this is a fantasy. If you grew up in the States, you are institutionalized. They won't last long in Portugal. You'll be back after realizing things you took for granted before aren't so easily available to you in this country.
Absolutely wonderful they'll quit coming to Texas by the way y'all can stop in Austin Texas and pick up Californians up and take them with y'all we don't want them here

My husbands long-time friend has been trying to get us to move to MX & I just don't feel comfortable enough leaving my family. None of us know how bad things will get anywhere (I DO believe it's all on purpose for control). We moved to FL 2 mos ago & so far I feel safer here – Gov is BASED❣️
This going to be a big problem. Because right now is not only from California, it's from all north of Europe. The cost of energy in Europe is rising like mad because this war and Portugal is very hot (in the center and south) and the cost of heating the house in Portugal is almost nothing (but we need AC in the summer), all the food and rent is very affordable to anyone that came from USA or North European countries. And the demand of houses is very high right now, the prices going to increase like i never see in my entire life. If you have money buy right now because going to be a great investment. Our property taxes if the house is less than 500k€ is peanuts compared to USA (note the same house of 500k€ in Portugal is almost a house costing more than 2 million U$ in California.
