Roman Abramovich, the billionaire owner of the Chelsea football club, has become a citizen of Portugal, adding the European Union member country’s passport to his existing Russian and Israeli passports.
A representative for Abramovich verified a story published on Saturday by the Portuguese daily Publico, which referenced papers from the justice ministry and said that the Russian-born tycoon had been awarded Portuguese citizenship on April 30, according to the article.
Newspaper reports that Abramovich’s case stemmed from an old Portuguese rule that granted naturalization to descendants of Sephardic Jews banished from the Iberian Peninsula during the medieval Inquisition.
Since 2015, thousands of Israeli Jews have gained Portuguese citizenship. Since the discontinuation of a comparable citizenship offer to Sephardic Jews by Spain in 2019, the number of such applications in Portugal has surged significantly.
