  1. I love your videos. ..so practical and to the point…I noticed you have a lovely young son…and hence the question …we are planning an exit strategy in 2.5 years from Toronto Canada ….our son is 22 years old today so how would this effect our residency permit as a file or does our son have to apply separately? ….we will most likely engage a lawyer but wanted some info to do our thinking

  2. Hi Alan! I'm 40 and have a plan to retire by 50 off of passive real estate income. We'll also be on Madeira for a month starting 7/19! I've been reading and watching about Portugal for several years, and want to scout it out. The US is becoming an increasingly hazardous place to raise a family, and I don't know if we want to stay much longer sadly.

  3. We just starting watching your videos this weekend, and we are really enjoying them. After years of talking about a trip to Portugal, we are going with two other friends (our ages 65-78) this October spending just over two weeks–Lisbon/Porto/Douro Valley. Then we fly to Barcelona for a trans Atlantic cruise (on Virgin) back to Miami. One port of call is Funchal, and we've already booked to go to the Monte Palace Gardens (via the gondola). So, on Oct 21, we will be on your wonderful island, and are grateful for you making it all the richer experience even before we set foot on the island. Peace to you!

  4. Oi! Alan.
    Beleza.
Great video. Great info. For me, great memories of Monte (Nossa Senhora do Monte Parish – Our Lady of the Hill). Most of my family belongs to Monte Parish.
Our home is a little bit further south (Nossa Senhora do Livramento – Our Lady of Deliverance sub-Parish).
The Tropical Gardens had no public access back then.
Loved the Largo da Fonte (The Fountain Square).
Our Lady of Monte is the Patron Saint of the island. Huge Street Festival in August… (check it out).
    Thanks for a great video.
Enjoy your New Life Journey in Madeira (It is getting real bad in USA and Canada – No longer safe living here – crime galore).
    Forca! Saude!
    Cheers
    Tchau!

  5. I'd emphasize having NO debt (Except mortgage) if you're planning to be financially sound. Otherwise you have to add 5-10% more and that can make all the difference between living and struggling.

  6. Hi Alan and Leslie. Check, Check, and Check! I just found an apartment in Funchal and, although I will be paying a bit more than planned, I can find something cheaper or buy something when I get there. Yes, I agree that one should plan a wiggle room of 10-15% because of increasing/fluctuating prices and exchange rates.
I'm in that weird position of having to pay rent when I am not there for the D7 and completing plans to retire in December. My budget for moving is $13,000 because I knew the rental issue was going to be a big one. I am looking at various medical options at this point but can wait to make my decision in the fall. Thanks for this video, very important. There are so many details that people don't realize must be done. Some actually think it's a snap to get the visa and move because some videos present it that way. You speak the truth!

  7. Hi Alan and Leslie! Thanks for a really nice video tour of the Monte Palace Gardens filled with great information and advice for preparing and moving into retirement. Your advice is very relevant to myself and my wife, so we appreciate to taking the time to create these excellent videos. Cheers!

  8. My why is I want to live to the fullest and not being retired is no way of living. I want to be financially independent living in either Spain or Portugal. I would definitely spend a lot of time both countries if I hit the lottery (or come in to money somehow)
